Open your doors and they will act like parachutes and slow you down as well.

That sucks man. You have to do what you have to do. Asheville is a great place with alot of history in that area.

Don’t know what your moving budget will be, or if you already have a place lined up for when you get there. You can pick up a used toy hauler for under 10k load up whatever you need to take. Live in it for a while, did that when I got divorced. You said your folks have a few acres on a lake. No rent. Sell it for what you bought it for when you’re all set up again.
Something like this. Don’t know how to do the link thing so screen shots are what you get.

I've posted about this before in the towing section.

I had to move my family from Seattle to Boston on my own dime. I found a lightly used 22' enclosed car hauler rated at 10k lbs with a weight redistribution hitch for $5,500. Taxes, registration and insurance on it were cheap.

I'll be honest and say that I was technically overloaded, but I made significant brake, tire and suspension upgrades and it road smooth , safe and controlled for 3,300 miles. Crossed the Cascades and Rockies without overheating the engine or transmission.

Now that I'm here I've got free storage space for everything that I don't have a place for.

After I sell the trailer I calculated that it would save me about $5k over the next cheapest moving option. (And that includes the "wife sanctioned" truck upgrades I had to make to get ready for the trip. Unfortunately no supercharger though.)

Buy it used and you'll only have to spend half of the retail on a new trailer. Make sure you have tandom 5,500 axles, trailer brakes and a true car hauler (8.5' wide instead of 7') and it makes a lot of sense if you can keep the total weight down.

Be prepared to sell a lot of unnecessary stuff though.

I kinda just went though this, had to move out of the house we were renting and had to move in with the inlays for a bit till our house is done. I priced out pods and storage places but ended up buying a used enclosed trailer. I got it for a steal and could always sell it when Im done if I want. Right now I have most of my toys and garage stuff stored in it parked in the driveway.

Good luck! If you end up in NC I will have to stop by one day. I would like to eventually move and that was on the list. Actually you told me about Asheville
