Yes, using the motor as designed and it eats main bearings… I’d say most would agree that’s been the big problem with the 3.4TT.

$10K-$12K off sticker right now and financing incentives are helping for sure. I think the deals are bound to get even better come fall given the inventory… and Toyota playing the incentive game like the big 3 isn’t “normal” for the Tundra. And incentives like these absolutely crush resale values for owners who paid sticker or more, I’ve had GMCs for work and know that all too well.

I agree that incentives help but everyone is plying incentives so that is mox nix. I think the bigger factor is they've come up with a truck that is more current. I'm not a Toyota loyalist. A Gen2 would have been 4th on my list. I ended up with a gen3 so effectively I'm a "new" customer.
All the 1/2 tons have issues IMO so the market is pretty fluid with lower brand loyalty than ever.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I still trust my tundra more than a g.m. or ram V8. They've been wiping cams with the cylinder deactivation for YEARS and continue to produce these motors. But yes, Toyota does have a steep hill to climb. . .and they will, starting with the recall. . . Atleast they acknowledge a huge issue.

    Lots of stuff!
That sounds like a great dealer experience. I have been communicating with Toyota Canada about the recall and they basically told me where to go. The dealer I got my Tundra from has gone silent.

You are doing great to have a Tundra to use for the next 6 to 12 months. That is my guess on how long it will take to get the new complete engine assemblies up here.

I am surprised that they told you to drive it after the engine knocking and shut down occurred. I would think that a tow would make more sense? But then again, no tow hooks! :)

Not sure how much you know about this whole issue since you’re new. But thus far, Toyota has been replacing blown motors with a short block. Which basically disassembles into a billion pieces and has to all be put back together by a mechanic who’s not going to want the job. And most of the short blocks, for all we know, could be the same exact motor that’s been blowing up. The recall will replace with complete long blocks but I don’t think they’re available yet. I’m fairly confident those long blocks will be corrected. No way Toyota would replace 100k plus motors unless they have it figured out. Whatever it takes, wait for the long block.

OP - Sorry to hear you lost your engine. Interesting the reported failures happen about 95% of the time while passing. Sounds
Like you’re being treated well. You’ll have a nice fresh engine soon hopefully.
    * 2025s were just announced to be between $450 and $2495 higher than the ‘24 depending on the their trim level. Added one color, the mudbog brown. Massaging seats Platinum and up. *See Pickup Trucks Plus SUV Talk on YT.

I guess from the posts here I should consider myself lucky that my experience at the dealer level has been positive so far. It’s really unfortunate that Toyota decided to ditch the 5.7, had that been an option I would have jumped on it. I did read some posts about the short block being put in some, I’m not sure I would accept that remedy - my preference is a complete new engine. With my truck only having 39000 km on it I couldn’t in good conscience keep it if they did a short block fix as I would be scared to own it out of warranty. As a loyal Toyota buyer im concerned about the longevity and the resale on these units. Hopefully Toyota has done their homework and this is a proper fix.

Yeah I wonder how Toyota is going to handle the poor guys who have gotten short blocks recently. Are they still technically part of the longblock recall and entitled to a long block?

So I think my engine is starting to go, yesterday accelerating after merging on interstate and speeding up I had a weird shutter for about 100 yards probably... It went away. Driving today have not been able to mimic the same issue but on acceleration at highway speeds I swear there is a different vibration in the steering wheel while engine is spinning up that is not road related as I can replicate it on different pavements only at highway speed and accelerating. If you were not previously driving the vehicle and I'm pretty in tune with car handling and differences. Something is different since yesterday's shutter. So Will be keeping an aye of course on it. But the symptoms before failure doesn't seem to have a lot of details, I see the engine lights and dash errors while it's happening. I guess I can't easily find on discussions some of the minute things that are probably happening leading up to the big failures. I gotta imagine too that with these major engine issues there are transmissions that don't fare well because the engine is having an issue. I know I had a 2014 corvette that needed the engine replaced and they ended up doing that, along with replacing the clutch and rebuilding the transmission. So pretty crazy if I have two vehicles that need replaced engines as an adult, can't be common but I think I'm heading that way with this truck if I'm a betting man! Mine is a 2022 and under the recall with the notice sent already from Toyota and running 40k on the miles. I'm due for an oil change any day, still need to do my spark plugs, but not sure if the spark plugs are completely needed since they have already said the engine is toast and will be replaced. I do not believe the spark plugs are at all related to this issue I experienced yesterday, being I'm about 200mi over the 40k and will be doing this weekend or next. Just crazy reading other post of people with issues, and I have the extended warranty to 126k I think, so will that warranty apply to new engine or does the new engine have a 3/36k type of warranty?

@904pizza If you are able, can you pull an oil sample and send it to Blackstone? You might be the only person to have the small window here between symptoms and engine failure.

The warranty is a moot point. It's recalled so when the time comes they're going to replace the motor.

Drive it 20-30 mins at Hwy speed then punch it to pass. That’s how/when the majority of them let go.

Have you noticed lower than normal oil pressure? Increased use of the turbos at low engine loads? Significantly decreased MPG?

Those are all warning symptoms that have been reported.

I thought there was an aftermarket kit to remove deactivation, after that the engine is very reliable. To my knowledge, there's no aftermarket main bearing failure preventing kit for Toyota.

There are ways around it, yes. If you want to buy a new truck and tear into and possibly void warranty. . But otherwise, yes, very reliable engines

Nothing on oil (yet), I feel my MPG is down .5-1mpg lately, can't say anything about turbos but radio levels might be the issue there.

If you are doing it capture a couple oz in a clean container then get a sample bottle from your testing lab of choice and send it in
If dealer is doing it bring them a clean container and ask them to collect a sample for you

I do it to everything I buy. If there's a known cheap way to void warranty and fix the thing for real before it decides to break, I just do it. Warranty is not worth it if you have hands.

Sorry to hear about the engine failure in a relatively new rig... I'm glad to hear that your dealership is taking care of you so far; at this point that's really the best you can ask for. Good luck on a relatively quick and painless resolution!!!

If just bring in a clean and dry plastic container…. it doesn’t need to be too big… maybe 6 ounces or so. Biggest thing is to get the motor warm and take the sample in the middle of draining it (mid stream). As someone else said above, if you’re having the oil changed someplace, ask them to collect a sample for you. Once you have it, fill out a request form from Blackstone. They’ll send you a container to send it back in. You just fill in your address on the bottle. It’s a pretty easy process. Thanks for doing this if you can make it happen!
