I purchased a new 2019 Limited last week, and with 200 miles I think I have a major issue with my moonroof. I was on my way home last evening and I pulled the cover back(just glass exposed) and the glass was translucent and it had large black spots. I dropped it off at the dealer for repair or replace and we walked the lot. Every 2019 Tundra had the problem with some worse. I looked at some Highlanders in the showroom and they were clear. The Service Manager thinks there is a problem with the tinting on the Tundra(not just mine) and is calling technical support on Monday. Has anyone seen this? Have you looked at your Tundra? It is very noticeable when you look through a sunglass lens. Photo attached.

I did se my polarized sunglasses, it doesn’t photograph well without the sunglasses. But it s very obvious from 10 ft away. My video is a little better, but if you want to see it ask a 2019 Tundra owner or just take a trip to the dealer lot. It’s on every one I have seen. It’s easy to understand why it hasn’t been detected.
    1. A lot of people do not use their moon roofs.
    2. When they do, the press the button and both go back.
    3. I don’t like the wind noise( It’s worse than my 2006 which I still own). So I just pull the cover back for the light.

All other Toyota moonroofs that I have seen do not have this issue. When I walked the lot, I saw the defect on the Tundras with no sunglasses 10 ft away. When I looked at the Highlanders, crystal clear with and without sunglasses. The Service manager said it was a defect.

I don’t. It was very difficult this morning when I tried to take the photo with my iPhone. It would not focus, but it is very obvious when you see it. The sunglasses photo also doesn’t duplicate it, but it does make it more visible.

Just checked my '18 - same thing. Even more pronounced than your pic, in fact. But I agree it's not a defect but rather an artifact of polarization. Which is a GOOD thing. Try this:

Hold your (polarized) sunglasses out in front of you while looking at the sunroof. Then rotate the glasses. Does the pattern change and alternate? It should. If both pieces of glass have really high quality polarization, it'll even go black at some positions.

It's possible that only the Tundra is polarized, if you're not seeing this on other models. And it's possible that there is actually a problem of course, but my guess is not.

Is there a tint/film of any sort on the outback?

    Saybng,

There isn’t a tint or film on the Outback, just clear glass.

    Squatting Pidgeon,

From the article you referenced. “But it's always visible only with polarized glasses.” I will stress again, the defect is very obvious without.....polarized glasses.

If the window glass has been tempered, and you then look at the glass with polarized sunglasses, you will see this on any tempered glass window. I regularly wear polarized sunglasses and I see this on MANY vehicles.

This is not a defect, it is simply variations in the tension of the glass as a result of having been thermally tempered. It is more apparent on some than others, likely due to variations in the manufacturing process.

That is the point I’m making, you can see the defect without sunglasses. I know I can see variations in window glass with my polarized sunglasses. I can also see bonefish when I’m fly fishing better with polarized glasses. If I don’t have the sunglasses on, the bonefish are also there in the same spot. The moonroof translucent/black spotted glass is a defect; not my words but the words of the Service Manager at Toyota. I plan to keep the thread alive until this is resolve. All potential 2019 Tundra owners should pull back the covers on this issue.

If you and the service manager are correct, I will be amazed.

I can see the headline now: “1.5 Billion Recall Notices Issued...”

    Panicman,

It would not be a recall given it is not a safety defect. It would be handled under a technical service bulletin.

    Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

Recalls should not be confused with technical service bulletins (TSBs) which are issued by the manufacturer for less serious problems that affect the normal operation of the vehicle. Sometimes called "secret warranties," TSBs cover known problems and provide repair instructions for service technicians and accordingly are distributed to all of the manufacturer's dealerships.

Unlike recall-related repairs, which are performed on a no-questions-asked basis, TSB repairs are made only to resolve problems that can be verified by dealer service technicians. And generally these repairs will be free of charge only if the vehicle is still under warranty.

    915Tundra,

The Toyota Service Manager at the dealership disagrees with your opinion of “my truck is fine”. I’m sure you have something that substantiates your opinion. Do you care to share it?

    Thanks
