The charcoal bag thread reminded me of a fiasco I had and how I resolved it. Thought I'd throw this out here in case someone else runs into a similar situation: (long read)

Backstory: Went grocery shopping and loaded up the back seat of my Ram Megacab with a months worth of food etc. Got home and unloaded everything....so I thought.

Fast forward a week or so, I was traveling for work, drove my truck to the airport and parked it in a Valet parking place, I flew in late on a Friday night, get to the parking thing and wait for my truck, it's cold and a bit rainy, the guy pulls my truck up and I notice the windows are cracked a few inches, the driver has the drivers window down (That's odd I thought). He jumps out and gives me a weird look and basically runs away, I jump in and am immediately hit with the most foul smell ever, it's like a throat punch, I jump back out and open the doors looking for whatever it is that could be causing it, under the back seat, laying on it's side I find a half gallon bottle of milk that had burst open and a bunch of cottage cheese was in it and all over the carpet. I drove an hour home with all windows wide open..

I was faced with 2 options, replace the entire carpet, or try and clean it. The MegaCab is not an easy interior to pull apart, it's freaking massive in there, not to mention nobody offered a decent kit so the Dealer was the only way to go. $$$$$$$. so I did a bunch of searching and came up with a game plan that actually worked REALLY REALLY well.

    1. I pulled out the back seats and threshold panels
    2. Used wet-dry vac to pull any liquid out of the carpet. Gagging profusely the entire operation and every time I had to empty it.
    3. Using a bucket of water, I soaked the carpet and followed up with the vac, doing this a number of times.
    4. I lifted the carpet as much as I could and got under it as well.
    5. after 3 or 4 rinses, I added oxy clean, did that a couple times and rinsed again.
    6. I got apple cider vinegar and sprayed it all over the carpet, soaking it. Let it sit for a couple of hours, rinse and repeat 2 more times.

This actually got out 90% of the odor etc, but after a day of drying I could still smell it.

    7. After everything was bone dry, I got a big can of crappy folgers coffee and spread 1/4 inch deep over the area. Let that sit like that for almost a week. (no backseat passengers for a while)

    8. Vacuum that up and I was 99% there, it really helped but I could every once in a while get a faint whiff.

    9. Order up a charcoal odor absorbing bag and threw it in the back under the seat. After a week or so, all smell was gone and it NEVER returned.
