Mike Sweers Interview - He wanted a Diesel Tundra (and to keep the 5.7 as an option)

Correct. They made more than 2000 lb ft which is more than a metric poop ton. And since HP is simply a number derived from torque applied at engine RPM, it's much easier for a gas motor spinning faster to make more HP on less boost. What I should have made more clear is that similar diesel engines of similar displacement make that 1200 hp figure at 80-90 psi instead of 125+. Gas motors can make it at 40-50 psi because, like you said, they are different animals and can typically spin much higher RPM.

A few other things pointed out in the interview are the cooling on the new tundra. I have several friends with 3.5 ecoboosts that pull their boats or trailers up mountains at altitude in the summer at freeway speeds. Virtually every one of them has had high temperature/reduced power issues from doing so. They seem to shrug it off like it's a normal thing. I HATE having and overheated vehicle on the side of the road (I've got lot's 'fun' stories about sitting on the side of the road) so that was one of my big issues with turbo motors in 1/2 ton's.

As much as I would have loved to have the 3.3 TD in the new tundra, I agree with Sweers point about emissions complications. I think it would have made the diesel option ridiculously expensive and possibly less reliable. Most of the issues I've seen from guys I know with HD diesels is usually emissions related. And they get garbage mileage with the emissions restrictions. So, again, thank you EPA for taking bad data and running with it.

On the plus side, I plan on hopping in one of the new Hybrid Tundras once they start sitting on the lots to see how Toyota manages the power delivery. I think it's an OK compromise. For now. Interested to see what they do to improve the MPG of the setup and see if it is something they will/can retrofit to the '22s (software tuning or small parts). Toyota doesn't really change HP/TQ/MPG figures year after year like the domestic brands, so that was pretty interesting to read from Sweers.

F Mike Speers. He's a complete puppet for Toyota. The only thing he is saying here is he 1000% knows the new Tundra is a disaster and he is trying to distance himself from it. Every part of this truck is embarrassing from the looks to the pathetic reliability and mostly to the insane underperformance in the engine with the V6 and more so with the Hybrid. "Game Changer" were your words Mike. Holy F.

I didn’t want to come off as a smart ass, sounds like you didn’t take it that way. Most people don’t know the engineering speak. Lol

Imagine getting this angry about something you don't own. Don't like it? Keep your v8 or go elsewhere. Keep the negativity out of the 3rd gen area, everything you're posting is purely subjective.

So unless you can only subject positive posts about the 2022, don’t have an opinion. Thanks for posting on the forum Mike Speers.

Nah how about we try to keep this a positive place for people with like minded interests. Go back to the 2nd gen page instead of bitching about something nobody cares to hear.

Interesting theory but not likely. The crumple zones make more sense. I'm still rooting for a Tundra/Sequoia "Prime"

I had a '79. Baby blue, factory ratchet shifter, 3.73's, 350, and bone stock with about 60k miles on it.

All I did was add a true dual exhaust and open up the air intake. It pulled a whopping 90 mph in the 1/4 but that was just enough to beat (and seriously piss off) the new IROC owners back then in '87.

You got me. I can’t afford my V8 Tundra, or our new RAV4 hybrid for my daughter, or the wife’s Tesla Y(do not recommend) or our rental properties in Mesa, AZ and Austin, TX which are paying me 80% more then 4 years ago or my horrible 401k that will let me retire at 59 with over 12k/month(yes, that includes SS at 62) so I guess that is where my anger comes from. I’m confused by the assumption of anger over something I don’t own. Why would I be angry? I’m disappointed that I now know I will be owning most likely a Ram in a few years because of this embarrassment that Toyota decided to release but angry, no, I have no reason to be, my life is incredible.

    A bunch
You're really throwing your head in the sand if you think the old 5.7 outperforms a 3.5 V6TT (Ford or Toyota). I have a 2021 3.5 EB work truck and that engine BLOWS the 5.7 out of the water. There's enough weight of equipment in my work truck that it's similar to the weight of an unloaded Tundra. I haven't driven a new Tundra, but I've read enough tests to know that engine is in the ballpark of the 3.5 EB, which is quite clearly a step up from the 5.7.

Is the new Tundra a game changer, no, but is it better than a 2007-2021 5.7 Tundra - easily yes.

Let’s not take this thread (like many others) and start insulting each other over a damn truck. It’s really sad watching this go down from the outside. Saying things like:

“Oh…can’t afford the new Tundra huh?”

“Mike Sweers is a moron (or whatever descriptive clever name)”

We don’t need to measure our cocks in here. It’s great some people have done well in life while other seem to kick them in the uprights every other day.

If we need to come in here like a bull in a China shop we will. Please don’t make us do that. I would like to say it hurts us more than you, but I would be lying.

I could be wrong, but I don't think his comments about underperformance are meant to imply the Toyota 3.5TT isn't as good as the 5.7. Much as I'm a Toyota fan, I can't help but wish they'd have thrown a bit more @ the 3.5TT. Granted, it's indeed in the ballpark, but given the amount of time they've had, and the smackdown the original 5.7L laid down in 2007 in comparison to what was available @ the time, I kinda feel like they *could've* had they wanted to.

With that said, it's also not always about power. I know several people @ work who own Ecoboosts. Fantastic power to be sure...but every one of them has had more shop time than my truck (which has had almost zero). Two of them had moderate issues that required 2 weeks or so of shop time. As I like to tell them "Yes, your truck easily pulls more than mine does...when it's not in the shop." :p

Going from my memory I don't remember a period when diesel was more expensive than regular gas at the pump. So the price of diesel is not going to help make the case to bring in these diesel engines either in a vehicle designed for the regular consumer.

LOL, no, no, no…. According to above they had to ditch 400 lbs off the truck. So, the 4 lb tow hooks we’re victim to needing to ditch weight. They also thought that ditching the tow hooks would increase their aerodynamics by .00000000000001% so it’s all good.

If he messes up the new Tacoma you can bet he will soon find himself working for VW designing fleet cars....The Tacoma is Toyotas flagship truck in the US market and one they will not take very well if his new design loses market share. The "anything is better than last Tundra" is one thing, but mess up a market leader and you are done...

I recently saw an article where he was already talking up the new Tacoma similar to how he talked up the tundra. Something about they are building it quality and durability wise to be the land cruiser for the american market. He did hint in the article is is very important to not mess the tacoma up etc. I will have to find the article again.

Same sentiment goes for the 4 runner, you can't mess that one up either...

    Found it
    https://www.motorbiscuit.com/toyota-tacoma-truck-might-fill-land-cruiser-shaped-hole-market/

    From article
“Where Tacoma goes, the rest of our trucks go. We have very passionate customers. Our customers have more active lifestyles: they hunt, fish, mountain bike, and camp. They make their vehicles unique to our own need.”

I don't have an opinion one way or the other but I think a lot of people think the third gen Tacoma is already messed up.
