Glad to find you all here. I'm gonna need your help.

    My father-in-law has a 2007 SR5 5.7L V8 he's willing to sell - I've always wanted one.

    What's the catch?

It's in his garage, jacked up halfway through a DIY starter replacement. I've gathered this can be one of the more PITA DIY jobs on a Tundra. He says the old starter is out - so we'll be halfway there this Saturday. Because if I, and my slender-handed wife will get the new starter installed he will sell it to us at a really swell price.

He threw his back out, so he can't do it himself.

I've never even changed my own oil and my wife has only ever filled a car with gas. I've watched many tutorials but I'm here to dig through some starter replacement threads and hopefully start getting to know the Tundra community the hard way!

You sure it’s the starter and not the battery?

Welcome, and u got this. Just make sure the battery is disconnected, and take your time. After that, learn to change your own oil. U will save $$$ and have the satisfaction of knowing its done right. Then, let the modding fun begin! Welcome, and good luck!

Ah, no catch. He's just sick and tired, and pissed at his truck for making him throw his back out. He'll come to his senses once the meds kick in.

It's probably just a test to see if you care enough to help out by changing the starter. Your wife's inheritance could depend on how you respond. :D

Welcome from the Texas Hill Country.

Drunk pulled in front of his semi a couple weeks ago. He flipped over and was trapped upside down under a pile of chains!

So I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt hahaha.

And he doesn't want me for the job, he wants his daughter because she has slender arms and fingers that can reach all those odd angles.

I don't know anything - last time I saw the truck it was in normal working order. FiL works on cars a lot so I trust him. Probably doesn't matter now - whether I want it or not, I've committed to helping get this put back together!

Fortunately Toyota engineers put the starter in a very easy location just in case it has to be replaced at some point...............

Id offer to help, did mine a couple months ago, but thats a bit of a drive for pizza.
I disconnected the exhaust at the "collector" flange and muffler, then dropped the Y pipe. Then pulled the OE starter out and installed the new one going past the exhaust toward the back. Hardest part was the heat shields.

Welcome! Just a headsup the labor guide calls for 5.2 hours for the starter replacement on the 5.7L. Ive done it in 3 but I've also got the advantage of having a lift. Keep your head on straight and stay patient. SIDENOTE: A 10mm quarter drive swivel socket with a long extension will save your butt on the heatshields(they are a pain). Also if anything appears to be in the way like the down pipe, pull the thing down and out of the way. Good luck!
