If it’s a challenge to judge the tightness of the plastic housing by just snugging it up then you probably shouldn’t be doing an oil change. Have someone show you or watch a few YouTube videos. You wrong in thinking that a tighter oil hosing will seal better. You could do that housing up by hand and it wouldn’t leak.

I changed to the metal oil filter cap in 2019 just shortly after I bought it in late 2018. Never had an issue

I changed my oil the other day so I thought I'd take a photo of the metal tab that I was referring to, you turn the filter until the plastic tab on the housing is past metal tab and you know it's on.

Enjoy your plastic. There have only been a few dozen on here documented broken.

User error. In my career with Toyota and doing thousand of oil changes I’ve only seen a couple fail because the previous a$$ hat over tightened it. On the real tight ones I would use my impact on them to remove and they would still be OK. Snug it down with a 3/8 ratchet and you will never have a problem but some decide tighter is better.

    How many metal ones broke?

I'm old school in that if you give me a choice between metal and plastic, I'm not taking plastic. Age, heat, and plastic don't go well together.

Welcome to the new world. Plastics have come a long way. Follow the correct service procedure and you will never have an issue.

I'm here - I'm not impressed. If you have an appliance in your home more than 10 years old do everything in your power to not replace it.

And I'll take that as a "zero"

LOL Where can you find the correct service procedure? In some random posts by some random people on a random web forum?

Oh I know. In the service manual. The correct service procedure, as developed by Toyota, gives specific torque values for the drain plug and filter canister.

Why do you suppose that is?

The dealer sure as hell doesn't use a torque wrench. Did my own oil change this weekend and that sucker was far beyond Toyota specs. Nice and slow with breaker bar since ratchet wasn't cutting it.
Oh, and I was short a bolt on my skid plate along with all three that attach to bumper shroud.
Only reason they have neen doing it is still under warranty, but didn't have time to bring it in.

Not sure where the whole thing with oil changes and warranty came from but you can absolutely do your own oil changes while a vehicle is under warranty. That said I have seen dealers regularly not put all the bolts back in skid plates, even had one no put a bolt in a caliper.

How about use some common sense and don’t over tighten it. Yes there is a spec in the service manual and seasoned techs don’t use a torque wrench when tightening because after you have done a thousand of them you know exactly how tight it needs to be. The problem arises because a shade tree tech or a dumb ass lube rack guy figures tight as fuk should work.

Thinking like this is why we now have plastic oil pans.

    None....
LOL Many people don't agree. I do i did 30 oil changes on a prius with plastic housing 0 issues, and now 20 on plastic tundra housing 0 issues. But some guys just think metal tough. Maybe i should make metal valve cover gaskets, and metal headlights, and metal seats. I could make a killing. Metal steering wheels, this list could go on and on. Chains for seat belts...
