Metal clicking sound when turning

those are just casting marks. thats the ignition cylinder housing/steering lock. its cast aluminum

 

actually @Voss does your truck even have a functioning steering lock?

 

Wow, that is quite the find. Sorry you have that but good thing you found it now. That is quite the engineering there.

www.car-part.com is a really good online junkyard. They do all the cross referencing parts from other years and they all ship the part to you. That’s where I would start.

 

Cast aluminum always looks cracked to me. Weird spiderweb stuff if does gets me every time.

 

Ever look in an aluminum cylinder head? The broken looking aluminum can scare you for a second. Lol

Yeah everything works fine. It was just the metal click sound that made me open things up.

I know this truck was a theft recovery at one point. Maybe the ignition was ruined and this was their easy fix...

Question, if I find the whole column that has its key, why would I need to swap out the key cylinder?

I have next to no knowledge about this kinda stuff.

Maybe so you maintain the original key (one key only) for doors/gas etc.

You’ll have two keys if you keep the cylinder on the new. Just a guess.

It’s about 2 hrs away. Not too bad

 

Called the junkyard and they said the unit they have doesn’t have tilt. If me has the tilt, would I be able to transfer it onto the “new” one? Or best to get it all in 1 assembly?
