Conversely for a buyer considering a new or new to them pre-owned truck and the choice is a between a recent model year 2.5 Gen or a 3rd Gen, either truck has its merits.

Until prices for used cars and trucks return to normal if a buyer can get a 3rd Gen for MSRP, the long term fuel cost savings certainly narrow the overall cost of ownership gap.

how are people getting 20+ mpg hwy on a 5.7L? It is nearly impossible for me to do better than 17 with the lightest foot and hypermiling speeds. Are these people using the imperial gallon?

Yeah, the dynamics for buying new vs. used are night and day different than when I purchased in fall 2019. There was very little price difference then between new and low mileage used Tundras. Now you can get a 2.5 gen low mileage for easily over $10k less than the same trim new.

Clearly, the new model has advantages in economy, performance, capability, etc. but strictly cost of ownership over 5-10 years you can come out way ahead buying used, depending on your circumstances.

No, they’re cherry picking their data. They once got 20 MPG going 65MPH on a slight downhill grade for 20-30 miles, so the truck is now legit capable of that all the time.

I see the same confirmation bias in gun enthusiasts when discussing the precision of a rifle. A guy shoots one 3 shot group at 100 yards that measures under 1/2” center to center. He then ignores all the other groups that shot over 1” and declares his rifle is a .5 MOA (minute of angle) rig. When it’s not.

Meanwhile my dumb ass is running 10 shot groups because more data points make for more accurate results. I’m freaking stoked if I can run more than one 10 shot group that measures under 1” at 100 yards from most rifles. That’s enough data to reliably call a rifle sub MOA. But that takes work, ammo, and brutal honesty.

    Correct.

If you have a rifle, sighting system, and ammo that can legit hold sub MOA for multiple 5 to 10 shot strings you have something.

Only a 3 shot group here and there is a happy fluke. Never to be trusted.

I'd rather know that the outfit will consistently shoot 1.5 MOA for 10 shots and plan accordingly than fool myself into thinking it is really a .5 MOA combination.

Which begs the question what your speed limit is?

For my area of operations the speed limits in western South Dakota are 65 MPH/105 KPH on two lane highways, 70 MPH/113 KPH on four lane permissive access highways, and 80 MPH/129 KPH on four lane limited access interstate highways.

I might get 17 MPG if I stay under 70 MPH in my old 2007, but going much above 70 MPH the combination of higher engine RPM and the exponential nature of air resistance take their toll. Plus I deal with a couple of long 6% grades to and from work. Looks fantastic going to work…. not so much going home climbing back into the Black Hills from the Cheyenne River valley. When the truck wants to grab 4th gear and hold it for 6 miles or so turning about 3600-3800 RPM at 70 MPH I’m not exactly getting great mileage.

In some ways I look forward to buying a 3rd Gen because I am optimistic that the iForce Max will have enough raw grunt to shrug off long grades and push a taller gear. I don’t care if it burns as much fuel as the 5.7L does because it’s in boost, I’ll just be happy to not have to listen to the engine whirring away at damn near 3800 RPM. Although if test results are any indication the new truck will not only push that taller gear up a hill but burn less fuel doing it regardless of boost.

Yes, what is the speed limit? haha I would only get 20 mpg on an extended downhill that required minimal throttle going 60-65 mph.

A factory blown 5.7L wouldn’t meet new emissions rules.

Agreed. There are couple cliffs that I endure on my way home and work. Doing 55 and letting off gas going off a cliff, truck maintains 55, but if you go 65 and let go gas, she will decelerate and needs light foot on the gas pedal to maintain 65.

    55 is the future.:rimshot:

I feel ya. I opted for a 2021 vs a 1st gen engine and style change. My thought was the 5.7L has many years of perfection built into and I feel the same way about turbos. I've had them in the past and every time I had longevity issues with them. Good luck on your transition

Same here!!! I made the right choice with the 2021 even though I paid more than the original 'new' price. It had 25k on it when I bought it. The family who bought her first was able to bring her back to the dealer and make money. Then the dealer just had to wait for the next sucker to come along.... and along I came.

Cool story bro. Hopefully that saves you a bunch of money, because the 2.5 Gen is so outdated and inefficient it’s not a competitive product anymore.

It's a fantastic half ton. I'm happy to pay less up front and more in fuel for something that is so hard to kill.

Toyota has made very clear they have no desire to play in the high performance truck or car market. In the long term they understand that a blown V8 will not meet future emissions standards, at least not in the long run. Toyota doesn’t develop engines to only use in one product for a few years. Maybe with the exception of the Lexus LFA, do you have LFA money to spend on a truck?

We can all bitch about it but that is Toyota’s way. If you don’t like it buy a TRX or Raptor R. If you need a bigger truck then buy one someplace else. Toyota seems to tolerate their North American operation’s desire for a 1/2 ton just enough to let them have one, but only in a limited way.

Since we’re airing grievances again haha I don’t get why there’s not just 3 generations. 1, 2, and 3. A minor facelift doesn’t warrant a new generation for other Toyotas, like the Tacoma in 2012-2015. That’s not the 2.5 Gen Tacoma. It’s the second Gen, all the way from 2005 to 2015. There was just a facelift in 2012.

    There’s 3 generations of Tundra. 1, 2, and 3.

My 06 was a first Gen. My 2016 is a second.

    Phew… I feel better now… haha.
