Since we’re airing grievances again haha I don’t get why there’s not just 3 generations. 1, 2, and 3. A minor facelift doesn’t warrant a new generation for other Toyotas, like the Tacoma in 2012-2015. That’s not the 2.5 Gen Tacoma. It’s the second Gen, all the way from 2005 to 2015. There was just a facelift in 2012.

    There’s 3 generations of Tundra. 1, 2, and 3.

My 06 was a first Gen. My 2016 is a second.

    Phew… I feel better now… haha.

    I agree.

    2nd Gen is 2007-2021.

This comment makes zero sense. It should save him money cause the 2020 should be a cheaper truck to purchase. It's also a proven cheap and dependable long term vehicle.

That's competitive in my opinion. Congrats, the new one can tow 2k more, gets 5mpg better, and has a big screen thats meh by most reviews. Big whoop for most ppl on here.

Wow! Good for you, that’s what they should be selling for. Not sure where your at but the used market in the northeast has not settled yet. But, now that we’re officially in a recession let’s watch it play out.
I can’t find a used 20-21 that isn’t over original MSRP! And I will gladly pay MSRP on a 2022 vs paying over on a used one.

No offense, but after owning an ugly, inefficient and terribly outdated Gen 2, we've got another Gen 2 (in a SUV box) for wife to replace her stylish, comfortable, premium piece of turbo junk that I was tired to repair (doing everything myself, including engine and transmission rebuilds), though it was only 6 years old. In 3 years in Tundra I was only pouring gas, replacing oil and, ugh, filled up a washer fluid, twice. Zero problems. We "downgraded" from a real thought after European luxury, not what Toyota thinks of it. No regrets.

Of course, Gen 3 Tundra can and should be better than a modern Swedish junk, but why pissing off by others, who buy a reputable reliability and longevity? Gen 3 is worse than Gen 2 in that respect, just because it has got so many extra parts that are known to age, degrade and break quicker over time. So, people still buy Gen 2.

Hence my 2021 being worth over $10,000 more than I paid for it brand new as of today. Mighty uncompetitive product.

Toyota just changed who the Tundra is competing with this iteration, that’s all.

It’s no bueno for those who want a work truck that competes with other 1/2 tons (and is actually reliable and actually American). But it will be good for Toyota total sales of Tundras.

The Tacoma has no competitor in sales. And the Tundra doesn’t compete with big 3 1/2 tons in sales. So why not attract their plethora of already brand loyal (or at least brand curious/trying) Tacoma owners to upgrade to a bigger Tacoma once they feel the need for a larger truck. 99.9% of Tacoma owners would likely consider a Tundra (that looks and acts like a bigger Tacoma) over another brand 1/2 ton. And they’re using it for cool guy stuff, not primarily contractor guy stuff. So the new Tundra is perfect for Toyota and Tacoma bros. It’s a big teenager bro-tastic Tacoma. And it no longer is trying to compete with big 3 1/2 tons as it’s differentiated itself as a big cool Tacoma instead of a work truck so they’ll grab a few from that market as well. Why compete where there’s no contest when you can make your own segment more or less? Makes sense.
Just sucks for those of us who wanted them to continue to make us a simple work truck. But we’re in the minority and their sales matter to them. Don’t be bitter about it. Just send me all of your 2016-2017 Tundras with a 6.5 or 8 foot bed and I’ll dispose of them properly for you… eventually.

Maybe in many many years. The Tacoma is too big of a money maker for them to axe it now and the next Gen has been spied already. I don’t think they’ll combine them, just offer them side by side as Tacoma and Tacoma XL as you say, and see which way the sales shift over a few years first. It would be interesting considering new Tacoma pricing to see how many just jump straight to the ugly headlight Tundra first ha. Man the new 4Runner looks rough so far as well. Kids will love it. Sucks for the grown ups haha.

Exactly! I wanted a truck that drives and acts like a truck. When I saw the specs and other info on the 2022, I ran out to get a 2021 before they were gone. They WERE gone a week or two later. I guess I’m not the only one who wants a truck that’s a truck, not a wannabe Buick.

I think this is where the sea parts so to speak. What you see as improvements I see as a bunch of unnecessary stuff added. To me the cameras , tablet screen , and ride bring no added value. Add in the fact that toyota reliability and quality control with this model appears just as poor the new bronco launch , and the fact that they added a turbo 6 which by design just wont have the same durability as any NA engine, and I think you find why a lot of guys are choosing sides. If the 22 launch wasn't such a shit show of reliability and quality control snafus then I think it would just be more of a new vs old debate like any other new model.

A function of the lunacy of the current auto market. That statement could apply to any used car or truck, so don’t kid yourself.

You would be a fool to pay $10,000 more for a pre owned vehicle than it cost when new.

That does save you money. I guess used Tundra prices are coming down to normal.

    What is the asking price?

    Any vehicle? Not even close.

I hope my truck becomes even more “uncompetitive” by the year. Soon enough, I’ll sell it and retire to Sedona off the proceeds.

We can have a discussion about rare, collectible, or historically significant cars being investments. Toyota Tundras are none of those things, nor are 99.9% of vehicles ever sold.

We are officially in a recession, interest rates are going up again, fuel prices remain high, and consumer sentiment is headed down. This time next year it will be even worse.

This moronic auto market, and housing market for that matter, are about to get crushed. People who are wildly over paying for cars and houses will very shortly be way upside down in them.

That isn’t accurate. My face gets more red, and I froth at the mouth.

I also love V8’s, but it is fair to judge them in the context of the market segment. In 2007 the 3UR-FE was the most powerful and sophisticated V8 in a 1/2 ton. By 2021 that can’t be said, the 3UR-FE is an OK V8. Nothing exceptional anymore, and in the context of longevity, versatility, power output, and popularity it’s just an also ran. Time has shown that the GM LS1/2/3 architecture series of V8’s (iron block truck variants too) are probably the best overall mass market V8 made in the last 70 years. Any model that doesn’t have variable displacement can be expected to run for just as long as a 3UR-FE, but they cost a lot less, weigh a lot less for aluminum block models, and take up less space.

I own both, and the LS is just better. More power, more responsive, more enjoyable.

Hard to give financial advice if not also telling people to buy well used. A ten year old Tundra costs a lot less than a brand new one and the depreciation is already eaten up quite a bit rather than losing it. You can’t say the brand new truck is what people should buy… but also people should be financially wise. Buying new is for people who have no debt, disposable income, etc. not the every day person who the recession is affecting that you’re talking about. Can’t play both sides of the card, man. Should people be financially responsible and buy the cheapest used vehicle they can find and drive it as long as humanly possible and only upgrade when absolutely necessary? Or should they like the brand new over priced shiny thing and get it because it’s so new and great?

My two 5.3 and two 6.0 Silverados were/are all reliable engines. The engines are for sure. But not the rest of the vehicle.

Sure I don’t disagree. If a person really should not be buying a new vehicle, they probably also shouldn’t be buying a late model pre-owned vehicle in the current market since they are near enough as much money as a new vehicle.

Frankly the best option for most is to drive what they have, and maintain it. That’s been my plan for quite awhile, but when I do buy I buy new. Then maintain it, and drive it well past being paid off. With that in mind I avoid vehicles that are outdated so that I’m not tempted by the next thing to come along. I get what I want because I know I will stick to my plan if I do.

You mean there is more to a vehicle than just the engine?

That’s just not possible. If that were the case late model Tundra owners would have nothing to bitch about on the 2022 because it’s better in every way from a features standpoint and aside from first model year stuff will end up being a typical Toyota.
