They are predicting a 20' storm surge that will travel as far inland as 40 miles, 50-60' waves on the coast AND the WS just clocked 155 mph winds on the East eye wall. We're 30 miles N of Slidell and only at 45' elevation, they are going to get hosed, I sure hope they don't stay.
This is a much bigger storm that Rita, we actually didn't get much from her here. Gustave screwed us bad, no power for over 2 weeks. Wind wise this is going to be brutal

Af 300 is currently flying a reconnaissance sortie into Laura.

If it can confirm the numbers that radar is saying we have a cat 5. 155 mph is the set benchmark that Lauren will need to surpass to become a cat 5 before landfall. As of the radar data I have been showing in the last 2 posts. The radar is thinking a 160 to a 162 this is 5 to 7 mph over the cat5 benchmark needed.

I am hearing talk about a possible upgrade from the hurricane prediction center there is 2 points to this. Number one the radar is shooting at roughly 21000 feat that is very highly elevated data returning back to Lake Charles radar site. The last sortie mission flew and Laura had Max winds at 147 so a 8 mile per hour increase with satellite showing increases is more than possible.

Cat4, Cat 5 this is just mathematical scientific numbers we use. Unfortunately people will die tonight, buildings towns will be destroyed unfortunately

Cameron, LA will be wiped clean unfortunately. I hope Fotnot got his arse out of there already. The casino's in Lake Charles are going to sustain heavy damage. Gas prices will go up quick due to all of the production this storm is threatening. Prayers up for all of those who will basically lose everything.

We’ve got a good view from our hideout 5.5 hours from home. Lord help us. We had a house flooded during Harvey. We moved to higher ground and now Laura is threatening. Hoping with everything that everyone in the way of this storm got the hell out. I know too many damned people who stayed.

We dealt with that after Florence. I was in much better shape then but I still don’t understand how we did that. Cleaned out the whole house that we were renting in like 6 days and dozens of trips with a loaded down Tacoma. Thank god I had a truck to deal with that shit.

Man those better not become anything, they can fall apart where they are.

On a positive note back home since a few hours ago, no damage to speak of so super happy, just a dirty yard but I’ll get to that on the weekend.

That's GREAT news! How was the storm surge in Port Arthur? I spent several months working on a project at the TOTAL refinery there about 10 years ago. Barely above sea level.

Honestly thought the place was going to be underwater by the way they talked up the storm surges, 7’ above sea level is pretty much nothing, but seems like all of Port Arthur is pretty dry
My neighborhood just has a bit of branches and debris scattered about, no flooding.

Just a heads up to anyone coming back into the area, if you have no power, make sure you have some sort of protection. There's some people taking advantage of no power and breaking into homes

Galveston had some winds and very little rain. The people in this area were Very lucky. We have stayed for every storm in the past but this one we left. This one was not to be messed with. Had some friends stay and just by luck the storm did not hang a left because if it did the people that stayed would not be here today I’m afraid!!! When Ike hit some people stayed and they were never seen again!!! Galveston issued evacuation orders so we got gone!!!! Come back to some debris due to high water but that was about it, most boats left but will return, and homes were spared!!! Feel bad for SE Texas and Louisiana residents that were in this hurricane. Thoughts and prayers go out to all!!!!

I lived in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. I now live in Alabama. I'll take hurricane threats over snow any day.

Only problem with that logic is that snow won’t take away everything that you’ve worked a lifetime to build.

Bitch ran right over us. Luckily she went East of my house so I only saw gusts to ~65mph. Another good thing was that it has been pretty dry so in most cases, the trees that fell were unhealthy or compromised in some way.
My electricity only fluctuated a couple times. it used to go out with the slightest bit of wind but AEP has trimmed back a lot of trees in the last few years.
I bought a generator 8 years ago and only had to use it for about 3 hours in the last 3 years.

Both can be devastating, and a Midwestern Blizzard can take away everything including your life. High winds, heavy white out snow, monster drifts, ice jams causing flooding, sub zero temperatures and windchill readings. I have survived both, and I would rather not experience either of them again.

As long as you don't live within about 30 miles of the coast, that statement will GENERALLY stand true. When Katrina hit, there were some homes destroyed almost 100 miles inland from the wind. If you live on the coast, you might get totally washed away like Waveland, MS was in Katrina. Nothing but slabs left.

We got lucky and only took some fence damage on the west side of the storm. We sit about 40 miles from where the west side of the eye wall made landfall. Our Sowela people weren’t so lucky. Long path to recovery ahead for them.

Fredericksburg. I had never been here before this week and it’s been fantastic. Once we figured out our home was okay we were able to take more advantage of this place. I want to move here now!
