Too many inferior steels are used in the Asian made balls that are imported. A shackle is the safest bet. If a failure occurs, it will be much slower with the shackle pin. Sad to see.

Terrible for all involved. I have been wheeling for years and have always used a heavy furniture pad on the cable or chain with the thought it would knock it down. It worked on the few occasions something broke or slipped. It was always to save the trucks though not us.
I will think about this poor guy next time I am hooking up anything.

Did the same thing with the pad or a blanket over the cable/chain.

If this horrific incident saves a bunch of lives, spreading the word is worth it. :hattip:

I have done something similar (not using a ball hitch though) and the chain around a stump came off at full load (2500 dodge) and that damn chain came back at me, folded the complete bedside of my truck. I will never use a chain again for any shock loading. That was back in my young and dumb days.

Many of us just don’t know because nobody really took the time to educate us. The one positive thing that the internet can do is raise awareness and spread the word on keeping us safer. Many, many people with big ego’s will say they knew about this, but I’ve been around the block and yes I’m a little redneck and I never really gave this a lot of thought until now. Like you said if this saves lives that’s awesome. I’ve sent this incident to many of my friends and co-workers, and they like me have done the same thing that cost this man his life.

I too saw this over at the ExpPortal.
I am now completely rethinking what I keep around to help get folks unstuck if needed.

Or just not helping people with ropes and straps. Let them call an auto service. It's a shame but that is likely the safest option in terms of risk and liability.

Off road 4x4ing would obviously be different. But for the day to day folks, who may want to help someone stuck in a ditch, it may not be worth it any more.

terrible accident, I am a firm believer of keep everything as soft as possible, soft shackle, synthetic rope, etc. And still always have weights over them when being used.
