I’m thinking about removing my factory LSD and installing a Truetrac. As of this point, the only reason i would do this is if my existing LSD is worth enough to offset some of the cost of a new Truetrac.

So what is a used 3.9x (2wd) complete 3rd member with a LSD worth? And what’s it actually REALLY worth on craigslist or facebook? I’m trying to get a real world realistic valve on this. And FYI, i’m in the PacNW, so it might make a difference depending upon the region that it’s located for sale.

here’s a pic of my truck that i’d be removing it from...

I've seen a few full assemblies on CL drum to drum the last couple of years for $300-450.

What they're listed for and what they sell for are two different things. And you never really know *what* they are because people never put cab types. Just "1st gen tundra" or the width.

The local Pick N Pull yards sell 3rd members (ford 9’’ or toyota) for about $115...whether that’s for an open or LSD. I can only assume that if a 3rd member is sold anywhere (such as a non-self serve wrecking yard, craig’s, facebook, ect) else it will sell for more money?

About $100 it what i would kinda shoot for if it were open. But the LSD is more desirable...but how much more is the question

Depending on mileage, maybe 50-75$ more? List it for 300$ local and shoot for the stars

Ah, so you're intent to keep the axle housing/assembly and just cannibalize/replace the guts only?

Toss it up for $150 and see what shakes out. I rarely see guts for sale local. It's typically the entire axle assembly at the price I listed. There's two on FBM around ATL now.

Yup, i’m keeping the axle housing. Just a complete 3rd member (with 3.9x R&P) that’s ready to be dropped into someone else’s housing.

Yeah, I've gotten to the point where I try to give away more than sell, or offer up at a steal, just to get the shit gone.

It's just painful sometimes. Like my wheel situation. I'd basically need to offer it up at 50% less than what I paid, just because I mounted 4 out of 5 and rolled around on them for 50 miles. Eating precious space in the family rec room right now.

My family is tiny, unfortunately. Only family within an hour is my MIL and she's in a condo with limited storage.

I loathe holding onto things though. I doubt I'll ever use them. Someone will eventually want them. It's not worth holding onto them.

Although, I could probably do better just selling them one-by-one as spare wheels on fleaBay @ $200/ea. It's such a hassle.

How many miles are on it? These are clutch based units iirc and to me it wouldn’t be worth much at all with high mileage. The trutrac is a great unit, Why are you looking to swap one in though?

There's roughly 230k miles on the odometer? I doubt the clutches have ever been changed, but i did drain the gear oil a few days ago and the fluid was pretty darn clean with just about zero fuzz on the drain magnet. I live on a farm in a rural area in the hilly PacNW where we get snow and ice. I also have to navigate farm tucks though our fields from time to time. It can get mighty challenging when the fields get muddy...especially when towing a trailer. I also go offroad quite a bit to cut firewood. I've had many different lockers in the past and currently have ARB's, Detroit No-Spin's, spools, Powerlock, Truetrac in my various other rigs, and they're definitely a very useful tool for me. My tuck definitely isn't a commuter vehicle. It is a farm truck, so it won't be getting any free rides. It will be put to work for a living.

With that kind of use I’d skip even the trutrac and go with a real locker.

If it's seeing icy roads I'd probably stick with an lsd of some sort. Powertrax or Detroit.

OEM 3rds are about $120-150ish in my area from pick n pull yards.

I do that with most of my friends as well for 4x shtuff. I'm also on a different forum (advrider.com), where i have sold LOTS and LOTS of my ktm parts, and i actually do know what those parts are worth, so i sell them at a really low price to simply undercut the next guy and get the parts out of my shop lickety split.

One of my buddies told me the exact same thing. So i posted the LSD up for sale on craigslist. At some later point i might go after an ARB or an E locker, but i currently don’t have any rush to put fund$ into that.

To update this thread, apparently my LSD 3rd member is (was) worth $250. I had it posted for $250 and sold it for $250. I did include a brand new OEM LSD sticker decal that goes on the back of the diff. I didn’t mention in my ad that i had one, so the buyer was quite exited about that sticker.

The guy drove up in his burgundy colored 2001 2wd truck. It was a v6 auto. Bilstein shocks at all four corners, rear Deaver spring packs, SPC upper control arms, 255/75-16 tires mounted on stock rims. He’s currently gathering parts to convert it over to 4wd, so i gave him a few tips.

There were a handful of other random Toyota 3rd members (non LSD) also on craigslist in the $400 range. Yes, that was just for a 3rd member (no housing). So i figured i’d just uncut the competition substantially.

Did you point him to the forum? @MrDirtjumper did a 2wd to 4wd conversion in the build threads.

I saw your craigs post and thought it was a fair price - I too tend to undercut everyone these days or just give stuff away for free.

    Dang.

Maybe I should list my spare 3rd 4.10's with lsd, new toyota pinion seal and solid pinion spacer already installed.
