So I was driving into work this morning and heard a POW then a clank. Thought maybe it was a rock stuck in my tread or something. Nope! The bolt came out of my lower ball joint. Just had the level kit installed 3 weeks ago. Now the install shop can’t look at it until Monday. I’m a little pissed off right now. At least my local Toyota dealership is able to order the bolt and will have it in tomorrow morning so I can have my truck back

Why did they even take that bolt out? Not needed for the installation

I'd raise some questions and concerns to the shop.

Did you take it back for their usual retorque?

Not yet. I was scheduled for next week. It’s been about 400 miles since the level was put on.

    Damn!!!

    Glad you are ok.

I wonder what kind of stress the knuckle puts on the upper ball joint when this happens?

    Hummmmm

Thanks. Hopefully it’ll just be a replace the $11 bolt fix but I’m sure it has put unnecessary stress on the ball joint. The shop told me it was fine to limp it the 10 miles to their shop. No thanks. It’ll just sit until my bolt comes in tomorrow. Hopefully won’t be too difficult to put back in?? Just jack it up and should realign right?

This kind of stuff drives me nuts. I know human error happens. But, that’s why when I did mine, I used a paint marker on all the nuts and bolts that I torqued. One, it tells me that I’ve finished that nut and 2, all I have to do is look under the truck and make sure all the lines of paint lineup and I know it hasn’t come loose.

Ya jack up the front and take the tire off and loosen the other bolt alittle and make sure you have red thread locker.

I didn’t use any thread locker. It hasn’t come out and I’ve beat on it pretty good. Proper torque is the key. My Toyota installation instructions do not mention any thread locker that I noticed. https://www.dropbox.com/s/sxjguie9rkx4dti/PTR13-34140inst.pdf?dl=0
The lower ball joint bolts need to be torqued to 221 ft•lbf

I’m a bit confused about what happened. When I did mine, I removed two bolts to separate the lower ball joint assembly from the knuckle. I didn’t remove the lower ball joint itself. Upon install, I applied threadlocker on those two bolts, and then torqued them up.

Hey Ed. It was one of the two bolts that separate the ball joint assembly. Sorry I wasn’t very clear on that. I brought it into the shop today and they re tightened everything down, apologized a few times and gave an alignment.

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense. Guess I should check mine to make sure they haven’t loosened. Hope the shop fixed yours for good.

There's no way they torqued those to proper spec. They're supposed to be at 221ft/lbs. That's scary, glad you didn't have a failure at high speed. I would advise you go get a torque wrench and torque every single bolt to spec in your suspension and mark them with a paint marker. Failures from a monkey not torquing things properly is a sad way to wreck your truck or get hurt.

    These are the specs:

Tie rod end: 51 ft lbs
Top coilover bolts: 33 ft lbs
Bottom coilover bolt: 144 ft lbs
    Wheel: 97 ft lbs
Upper control arm ball joint: 81 ft lbs
    Steering knuckle: 81 ft lbs
Sway bar bolt: 89 ft lbs
Top stabilizer bolt: 111 ft lbs
Lower control arm ball joint attachment(2 bolts): 221 ft lbs
Lower ball joint: 123 ft lbs
    Aluminum wheel: 97 ft lbs
    Steel wheel: 154 ft lbs
Control sensor wire A: 10 ft lbs on UCA
Control sensor wire B: 21 ft lbs on spindle
Sway bar brackets bracket (4 bolts): 51 ft lbs
UCA through bolt for TC UCA: 173 ft lbs
    Uniball: 100 ft lbs

    Rear spring: 77 ft lbs
    Rear Ubolt: 74 ft lbs
Rear shock upper: 21 ft lbs
Rear shock lower: 66 ft lbs

I cannot thank you enough for this. I've been searching and logging torques specs for the last two days till I randomly ran across this.
