Just good to know I’m not crazy and in the ballpark on my trade and price on a truck I’m looking for.

They will never give you what you can sell it for in a private sale but with taxes savings + convenience sometimes it make sense.

Not sure I would find a buyer at $12k in a private sale. Could try though. You don’t see much selling around me in private sales. Only vehicles under $5k in private sales. But worth a shot.

That's unbelievable! An 8 year old truck that could potentially be sold for $16K in a private sale? EIGHT years old and it only lost ⅓ of its value? Long-live the midsized pickup!

Mid size truck and foreign made. They run forever and Nissan hasn’t changed the looks in over 15 years. A 2 year old one looks just like an 8 year old one. Maybe that adds a little value too. Plus they are bulletproof!

PLEASE don’t ever into a dealership and tell them you’re willing to pay $320 a month on a six year loan.....

I would take the following approach. You’re not getting a great deal on that truck specifically. You can have that deal any day of the week, and maybe better if you are patient. If your truck sits six days a week and you only average 7k miles a year, your current frontier won’t depreciate as quickly as if it were a daily driver. Be patient and try to sell it privately to get top dollar. It’s a nice looking truck and seems like it would be a good deal for a private party sale at around what you’re wanting for it. Ask the dealer who gave you the original quote to buy the truck outright at their offer. Take it to car max and get an estimate. Whatever gives you the most, take the deal and use that money directly toward the purchase of a new truck.

With 0%, 0.9% and 1.9% loans all over the place....even this is no longer true. I have two cars, one at 0% and the other at 0.9% which I happily stretched as long as possible - paying $900 in interest over 5 years for TWO vehicles is a deal. That money I would've spent on a 3 or 4 year loan makes more in my retirement account over the 5 years than I save in interest....

Local, depending on where you are and online buyers/sellers.
Local, visit, get appraised get 7-10 day offer.
Online, Enter vehicle info, maybe vin, get similar offer.
Show dealership, should match or get closer to offer, or just sell to best offer.

Certainly not trying to argue, but I have never heard of getting a 0% or .9% finance rate on a used car. I have 0% as well but it was on a brand new truck....

I just contacted a local used car dealer who had given me an offer of $12.5k over the summer as a trade toward a Silverado. I just sent them a message to see if they wanted to buy it outright. Maybe it’s worth just selling to them outright they and then finding a Tundra or working a deal with them and buying that Tundra for $27.2k.

I’ll let ya guys know what they say. In case anyone is interested.

I doubt that dealership will buy it outright for the value they gave you but worth a try. They were probably going the reverse way to increase the value of your trade and to decrease leverage on the new vehicle purchase. Either way, good luck man.

Yeah. I just figure if they were $12.5k I’m a trade maybe they will come in at $11k or $11.5k and I’ll sell it to them. They can sell it on their lot for $15k and make $$3.5-4K or so. So maybe they will want it. I’d take $11k for it. Same as trying to get trade. Then buy used with cash in my pocket to put down.

You’re probably better off selling the Frontier on your own. 8 years old and with 81,000 miles on it, TBH, most big dealers wouldn’t even put that on their used lot....
It’ll just get wholesaled to the auction.

The place I contacted is that kind of place. They buy at auction and sell on the lot. They wanted this truck bad over the summer. Said they could sell it in a few days.

Ya but you were working a deal with them on another truck. Shop around at other dealers. As someone else here pointed out, get offers from carvana and vroom and Carmax if you have one locally. You’ll get a good idea of what your truck is worth to a place that needs to flip it. Your Nissan is in that range where your tax savings probably won’t offset extra cash you’ll get from selling yourself, it it may take some time to find the right buyer. But there’s no risk for you IMO, be patient and sell your truck. Then shop a nice clean cash deal for your next truck. You’ll save money but you have to have patience and not get emotional about the Tundras you see on lots now because they may not be there when you’re ready to buy. OTOH, there are alt of Tundras around. There will always be nice examples to choose from when you’re ready.

My other thought would be this: if they’re willing to let you drive away, they’re at a point as a business they feel they aren’t making enough money. Usually if you’re close, they will chase you out the door or blow up your phone for a couple days trying to get you back.

You should really try to sell yourself. Give it a good week of trying for that 12,500 but ask for more cause everyone going to haggle.

Yeah. Thanks. I’m in no huge rush. It will all work out in the end. I just have a price range I want to be in. I’d buy a new one but I can’t justify the payment for the truck to sit around the driveway for the entire week. Having a work car is great but sucks a little at the same time as my truck sits all week. I’m “stuck” driving a Honda Civic all week. Yuck. But at least the price and maintenance and gas prices are right! Hahaha. Puts extra money in my pocket right there. I’m saving about $250 or so a month in gas alone!

Was this offer for $11.5 at the same dealer, and do you have it in writing? If you're trying to maximize the money you get for your Frontier, you need to sell it privately on FB marketplace or Craiggy's or somewhere like that. The dealer is gonna make it clean and easy, but obviouly gonna give you less. Your tires and lift or bull bar do not add value on a trade in. Put the stock wheels and tires back on and trade it that way. You should be able to sell the wheels and tires separately if needed.

Just for shits and grins, I put it in on KBB.com and it spit out $9,342 as trade in value. I wouldn't be butthurt about their offer (its a $10-11k truck at auction), but I would never get my heart set on a used vehicle either. You'll love the tundra though, what an upgrade.

    I’m
Not butthurt at all. Just thought it was pretty low when I had a trade 4-5 months ago of $12.5k. I understand it’s an older truck and all. Just thought $9 was a little low and their reason is what ticked me off. They agreed it was low and stated it was low because they were selling me their truck low. So they basically said “we are making up the money on ya because we can’t sell ours”.

The trade should be the trade. It shouldn’t be dependent on their sale and inability to move their vehicle. I Understand it’s a business and they gotta make money too. It is what it is.

Yes my Tacoma was paid off but honestly that doesnt matter. Yeah, its an easier transaction because I just gave them a signed title but even if I didnt own it, the deal is still the deal. Another thing to check into, KBB does cash offer certificates that certain dealers participate in, I sold my GF's 4Runner this way, we got a lot more at a Nissan dealership than Carmax or Toyota were offering.

all that dealer was trying to do that day is see how serious you were by offering $12.5k trade in that day. They made a good offer based off value. If you agreed to $12,500 they would not come off as much on the truck you were purchasing more than likely.

Follow Chevy Dude on YouTube. Mike Davenport is a great follow and is a straight shooter. You are 100% wasting your time even talking trade in value with a dealer. Way too many variables.

If you want a really good and accurate value for your vehicle, go and ask for cash value today. Completely different number than your trade.

Your truck will realistically maybe fetch $11k at auction and that might be generous....

The advertised $15k price for some is realistically sell for $12,500. At $9,500 trade in by the time you pay salesman, time on lot, detailing, temporary insurance, advertising, etc.... The dealer maybe clears $1k.

I dated this crazy rich girl in college and her family owned 3 dealerships in East Tennessee and I worked in them in my spare time for 3 years. They were better than most and not as sales oriented, but I learned a lot of the tricks of the trades.

We bought a $45k 4Runner Limited 2 years ago and traded in a $20k Nissan Rogue. The salesman sold it to me for $1,000,000 and gave me $975,000 in trade. At the end of the day it is still the exact same money out of my pocket.

I also had a dealer sell me a car for $1 and charge a dealer prep fee of $34,999. OTD pricing is only way to negotiate.

When I worked at the dealer they would love when people came in and got all hung up on trade value or come in with KBB literature printed off. They always made a killing on those deals!

I honestly mean all this respectfully.

Put your truck up on Craigslist or FB Marketplace and wait for all the $7k offers.....

Just went through this with wife’s car. Try kbb, carvana and carmax and get offers for your ride. What that did is establish a fair market value and let me compare it to what other dealers were offering. At least then you maybe have some leverage

A lot of good advice on this thread. I sold a car on Vroom and was shocked that they offered me exactly what I wanted if I sold it on CL...super easy transaction and never had to leave me house.

The best advice I have is to walk away and go somewhere else. I’ve never been successful negotiating the price of a trade bc as others said: they don’t have to do it and don’t need to do it. They didn’t offer you what you wanted so walk. After all it is YOUR money.

Vroom came back at $9k. So maybe that is a good price and deal.

maybe I’ll wait a few months. I owed a little on the truck. I could clear more if I wait a few months. Plus it will be spring. When is the best time to buy??

Yeah that’s standard practice but u don’t have to allow it. Stay pretty firm at the value you believe it’s worth. Maybe a little wiggle room but not that much. Be willing to walk.

Dealership has to make money. I hate private sales because people in the area are shifty as hell. I sold a car on Craigslist a few months back. Got a notice from the cops that it was impounded and to come get it. Well seems they never transferred the title or registration out of my name. In Texas we have a law that if you report the sale within 30 days, that you are not liable for any tickets or crimes committed that arise from the vehicle. I took all the registration and plates off of the vehicle. Cop said they probably stole a temporary tag. I told them, legally I don't own the car and do what you wish with it. It was nerve wracking at 1st till I called the state and they said we received your form and you have zero worries. Other states may be different.

Had this happen to me as well. Except it was Oregon calling. Told them to talk to Washington because i sold it. The called back to confirm it was no longer in my name.
