Looks like Toyota may be backtracking on the key fob remote start subscription.

As recently as one year ago, my Toyota dealership salesman didn't know about using the key fob to remote start either. How embarrassing. I've had key fob remote start on every vehicle I've owned since 2003. Toyota really needs to get with the times.

Toyota is probably telling to “push” the App. It is all about the money after all.

Yeah that seems to be the thing for companies now to have a subscription for stuff.

When I bought mine I specifically asked if the key fob remote start would stop working when the free trial period ended for the app. His response was “No! The remote start on the key fob will always work regardless if you pay for the app because there’s no way for Toyota to control a function on the key fob” obviously he does not know what he is selling. They wouldn’t show me any features the truck had either, due to “COVID”

While not the same person, this is the same place who screwed up my registration and title which took many weeks of pushing to get resolved. Meanwhile my truck was illegal to tow trailer due to the inaccurate info they had on my registration.

A bit of a cross post, but the fob remote start is software disabled then you decline the Toyota Master Data Consent.

The Master Data Consent, from my understanding and screenshots shared on the other thread covering connected services, means that you share all your connectivity and telemetry data with Toyota. Decline sharing your data, the fob stops working.

This business decision is what I found most discouraging about my 2021 Tundra.

Hot take: bothers me more than the removal of the transmission cooler.

I have a 2020 - When I bought it I was told specifically that the key fob would not work and that the "ONLY" way to remote start my truck was to use the app. I saw the 3x method and it worked while I was still connected. I figured that it would stop after my trial ended. Here I am almost 6mo past that and the 3x still works.

After reading this, I tried the 3X on my 2020 TRD Pro and it works. Also tried it in my dad's 2021 TRD off road, also worked! He was super happy!!!
My truck is parked in front on my kitchen window, perfect range. Sucks that it turns off when opening the door, but it's nice climbing into a warm truck!!!

Yahoooooooo! Glad it worked for both trucks.

I take it the dealership never mentioned you could remote start your truck using the key fob. Mine didn’t.

Pretty sure all the manufacturers factory remote starters automatically shut the vehicle off as soon as any door is opened. I think the big push was from the insurance companies due to vehicle thefts. So their lobbyist greased the politicians and here we are.

My old Tundra had the “Best” aftermarket remote starter! It not only DID NOT SHUT off when I opened the door but once I inserted the key and turned it to the “ON” position I could then step on the brake and put the vehicle in gear. If I didn’t put the key in the ON position the truck would shut off as soon as I stepped on the brake to try and put it in gear.

Best part tho……if I had used the remote starter and needed to stop somewhere, say like the post office, I would put the truck in park and then press the remote start button once (while the truck is running) and I could then turn the key OFF and remove my keys and the truck would still be ON. So I’d be able to exit the truck, lock the door, and then once again re-enter the truck while it was still running.

I’d simply do the same thing, step on the brake without putting the key in the ON position it would shut off, and in the ON position I’d be able to drive away!

Plus the distance on the remote starter was over 200 feet. Boy oh boy was that ever a great remote starter.

No, this is a Toyota/Lexus thing. I also own a Honda and a Chevrolet and they both allow the driver to get in and “take over” without killing the engine. Provided you have the key, of course.

Good to know. My Subaru was the same as Toyota. Subaru remote starter was way way better than the CRAP Toyota starters, a blue light on the clicker blinked letting you know it got the signal and turned solid blue when the car started. Unlock and open the door and it shut off just like Toyota but starting it was so much better.

I think the Toyota remote starters are junk.

Wish I still had my old remote starter or one that worked as well.

I just started digging into this with a 2022 Tundra SR Sport on order. A subscription to make a $60k truck work? That's ridiculous. Not even sure if navigation will work on the 8 inch screen I have coming without a subscription? Will certainly be going into the dealer next week to discuss. This cheap attempt to bilk people might end my desire for a new Tundra.

My subscription service expired in Sept 2021. The FOB ‘3 click’ method has been working fine after Sept. until I just tried this morning. I’m not sure when it stopped but WTF Toyota.

Anyone else running into this issue?

I never even signed up for the connected services trial. 2 years later, the key fob start still works.

I did notice the other day that 3 clicks wasn't working consistently, but I found that one "unlock" followed by three deliberate "lock"'s works.

In case you guys didn’t know, if you have an Apple Watch, you add the Toyota app and then tell Siri to start your truck and other stuff too. Not sure if this works with a Android based watch or not

Does the window sticker say “Remote Connect” or starter?

When I pressed unlock 3Xs on mine it did t work either. But when I pressed it 3Xs and held down the 3rd press for say 5-6 seconds then it did start.

My other Toyota I hold it down on the 3rd press until the lights blink and then release it and it starts.

Give it a try……who knows it might work.

Remote start might not be an option

Id still give it a try and hold it for a few seconds on the 3rd click.

Not sure if you really meant UNLOCK but to start you should be hitting lock 3 times and hold down on the 3 time.

A friend of a friend works on electronics on cars. Wether it’s wiring lights or remote starts. I have a computstart with the drone mobile set up. I can press lock on the key fob 3 times to start it or use the app anywhere in the world as long as your phone has signal

Just tried this in my 21 without the push button start. Didn't start the truck. Darn. Was hoping for a freebe.

So wait, how does it work? I’ve thought for years that my 1794 doesn’t have remote start, which I never understood on such a nice truck otherwise. So you just hit the lock button 3 times and then hold it? Or just hit it 3 times and wait?

Took me several tries. I wasn’t holding the 3rd click down long enough like 5-6 seconds.

Finally I got it right. Toyota Remote Starters are JUNK
