I lived in Grand Forks for 4 years. When I left it was -50°F the two days that the movers came to pack and load my house. The doors were open almost all day and our heating bill for those two days was 3 times more than our most expensive month of heating.

A few days later my wife and kids were flying from Grand Forks to Seattle with a connection in Minneapolis. It hit -70°F at the MSP airport and my wife and kids were stuck in a hotel for 2 days because they couldn't de-ice the planes.

There's a lot I liked about ND, but it kind of blew my mind when someone was telling a story and had to specify that the temperature was "above zero" when they said it was 60° outside. (It was just as plausible in his mind that I might assume he was saying 60° *below zero* so he made it clear.)

Fun fact: Grand Forks, ND is the only place in the lower 48 where it's been colder than both the North and South Pole on the same day.

-19 when I left for work today, and now currently -4. Still warmer than -50 in MN. Truck belts make a horrible sound when I fired her up this morning, my block heater was plugged in too.

Damn. The girlfriends old co-worker just started a job in MN, and both of their vehicles wouldn’t start.
People don’t believe me when I tell them plugging in a fuel injected modern vehicle is a good idea up north.
To cold for me in MT/MN/ND anymore. Learning to speak Spanish now to become a Mexican resident.

But on a serious note, cold kills @20 times more than heat. Shade and darkness reduce exposure heat but you can't get away from the cold.

usually thats not an issue anymore running 0-20w synth oil. its more of the battery producing enough CCA to turn over the engine. i think the 18 tundra has a dying battery as lately the charge is dropping down to 11.3v and the day it died it was 10.x volts. started right up 5 seconds after putting jumper cables on it.

normally the battery sits around 11.7 or 11.9 when not running and 13.1 when running.

remote start app gives a readout of battery voltage running and sitting.
