I never knew there is such a thing as a mushroom knife. Now I need to find some mushrooms so I can get another knife.

It's got a nice feel for a cheap knife and seems to HD an edge. Apparently I have abused it at some point. When I have a few minutes to kill I've been trying to revive it. The half closest to the handle has a nice edge. The rest is pretty rough. What's the best way to get the front and point right? I've mostly been going from rough to smoth over and over on a whetstone but it's taking a while.

My guess would be a coarse belt sander or grinder to get it to a point and even it all out. Then get an edge and then time on the whett stone. The belt sander will save a lot of time. But I am sure ole Ray will tell ya!:). Good luck

With nicks like that blade has you pretty much have to re-profile the edge. Basically grinding it back to the point that the notches disappear and then grind a new edge bevel. Does that make sense?

It does. The grinding process is unclear. I've got a few grinders. Put the blade 90 degrees to the wheel? I'm thinking scribe a profile with one of these. But bench grinder, belt sander, by hand on a coarse stone or something else?

Use what you have. Bench grinder is fine.
Yep, 90*, basically you are flattening where the blade is now. The French curve can help you get clean lines. That’s the easy part, lol. Grinding the new edge profile and keeping it symmetrical and following the original grind and then getting it polished…that’s what will be kinda hard!

That’s a beautiful pattern. Etching the steel and seeing the pattern revealed is the highlight of my work! Always exciting and sometimes so stunning it takes your breath.
That engraving, tho. Reminds me of the pearl handled revolvers in the early John Wayne movies, lol

Yes, it is. I have not yet made the sheath. Best to wait until I determine if a buyer is right or left handed.

    Only, $3,000.00
Sterling silver scales with inlayed sapphire!
You should get 2 of them.
I know that a lot of collectors buy knives that have to be kept in a safe. Definitely some amazing work!

I'm good... just thought the pattern was neat; this damn laptop just cost me $1600. :smash:

I hate replacing things, but my old one went 9 years so I guess that isn't too bad.

    Beautiful!
I recognize the auto tech but not positive about the other one. Can you please post just a little information? Does one of those knives fit your need for an edc?

The smaller one is a Dynamic Knife Design, by knife maker Wayne Clark. The shark tooth blade is 1.9 inches making it a California legal automatic knife. It is my preferred EDC since its size makes it legal to carry.

Don’t think I’d ever want to live there.
A blade that length is about perfect for most of the time. Clark knives are quality stuff.
Even when skinning deer or elk I prefer a blade in the 3” range, max.

This one is #3 for your set. 318 layers.
I know that Sontoku you have is a true kitchen workhorse but I would not be surprised if you find that this one becomes your ‘go-to’ for most cooking tasks

So, I’m done with the 4th knife of the set. I wish I could have known that I would be doing a set sooner, there’s a few things I might have done different. 0006F673-1A0A-4138-93D0-EF947402A96C.jpg BE8D7A58-A98D-4D99-9C71-15BC48CB130A.jpg BC08C175-C8EC-4094-BE52-9DC586156727.jpg

I have to get something to put them out on the counter for display. Four of them together will look awesome!:)

I have heard similar comments from quite a few people after their first experience with a quality carbon steel knife. Correct heat treatment and good edge geometry combined with fine steel is not easy to dismiss.
Keep several of those old knives though, for when you have company that wants to help you in the kitchen. Most people won’t take proper care of the knives.
