I need to find a good storage solution for my pocket knives. I have way too many and I need to organize them. This is most of them.

He is. Generous, that one. I was in town for a week. Took me to his outdoor range. And to his target pistol league. We were the only guys there under 60. That was really fun.

Needed a quality EDC and got a good deal on a Benchmade Bugout; just shipped today.

Additionally...while I'm not 'happy' about it, my father passed January '19, and he has/had a TON of knives. Mom wants us to stop by and figure out which ones we want - he literally had thousands of dollars of EDC and other knives. Looking forward to seeing what he had.

Ella, the $300 max budget you are limited to prevents access to even a single high end custom kitchen knife. To get a small “set” in this range I would just go with the Henckels and not be too hung up on the steel. I’m afraid this might not be what you want to hear. Another thing, even with the best steels, you’re not guaranteed a good knife. Heat treatment and edge profile make far more impact on performance. Does that make sense?

I appreciate it. The good thing is that while it cropped up suddenly (within like 3 months he went from a spot on his long to the doc saying 'it's everywhere'), he was aware right up until the moment he passed; so we had a lot of talks, and nothing was left unsaid. :) We had a VERY close relationship so even now it still feels like he'll walk around the corner. (Dammit, who's cutting onions in here....)

    I'll absolutely do that! :)

That's how it was with my FIL.
It's been 6-1/2 years now, and my wife and I both still have vivid dreams where he's right there with us, just hanging out doing the things he normally would do.

I am a fan of Henckels knives. Shun and Boker are great also.
Big thing to look out for though is where they are made. I have Henckels that were made in Germany that are awesome, sharp knives. A couple are made in Spain and are not the same as the German ones, and then a couple that were made in China, that we bought when we were on vacation one time and just needed some knives to use in the cabin that week, that I should have left there because they cannot get sharp no matter what I do, and if I get it somewhat sharp it doesn't hold the edge at all.
So, that would be where steel quality comes in, but I don't know enough about it.
Bottom line is, don't just go by a brand name, unless you go with the really high end exclusive, no knock-off brands. Most of the well known brands like Henckels will have different lines of quality.

So I got my brand spankin' new Benchmade Bugout in the mail, and was all proud of it and stuff....until my son got home. Riding home in the truck, I said "Hey...wanna see something cool?" and handed him my knife, all proud.

He said "Yeah, that's just like mine." He then pulls out a Benchmade Bugout knife EXACTLY like mine. I asked him "Uh...where the heck did you get this?"

Turns out a friend of his SOLD HIM A BENCHMADE BUGOUT KNIFE FOR $5. WTF.

I don't know whether to be proud of, or upset at, the little sh*t for buying the same knife I did, except at maybe 1/25th of the cost. All I had to come back with was "Uh...well MINE is under lifetime warranty."
