So my LEO client wanted to be able to replace his bench made with Damascus. This one was a bit of a challenge without any machine tools, lots of drilling and filing.IMG_0221.jpg IMG_0220.jpgIMG_0219.jpgIMG_0218.jpgIMG_0217.jpg

I have a cheap machete I use at the property. The wife was trying to think of Xmas gifts one year and figured a "nice" machete would be a good gift (bless her heart). This is why online reviews aren't always helpful to folks looking for things they're not familiar with.
It sure looks cool, but pretty useless as a tool. Definitely 100% useless as a machete.
It says RT140 stainless. Is that difficult to work with? Thinking of shortening the blade by half and making something a little more useful out of it. Not sure what yet.
It's probably in the neighborhood of 24" end to end.

Nevermind. A Google search turned up zero results. That's because there's no such thing. RT140 is a model #.
    It's 3cr13 stainless.

I’m not aware of the Oregon law regarding this. The sheriff that requested it told me that virtually every LEO that he works with has one of these, as a backup weapon, tucked into their molle tactical gear. One of the things that made this a challenge was getting the fit right for the existing scabbard.
Usually you make the sheath for the knife, not the knife for the sheath!

edit: he’s an Oregon cop, so I guess he should know.

3cr13 stainless is a decent steel for a machete or camp knife. It maxes out hardness at about a Rockwell 55 which would be kinda soft for a skinner but great for a machete.
If you cut the new shape you want with a peanut grinder and then use some method to grind it that doesn’t generate much heat, you should be able to keep the existing heat treatment and handle in tact.
A water spray system on a belt grinder would be perfect

I just finished up some research on this (there’s enough different opinions and case law, to make your head spin).
I believe that the only way for this to possibly be illegal is if it is carried concealed.
Definition of “carry” & “concealed” need to be reviewed, lol

    Picked this up today!

Couldn’t help myself once I found out the claymore mini was a thing. Ended up ordering one from my local shop and it came in today!

I think it’s the perfect size for daily pocket carry!

I did a bit of recon too. Sounds like:
    1. No size limit but cities can have separate regs.
    2. Butterfly knives and basically anything with an assist mechanism are prohibited
    3. No other knife “type” ban exists, but “intent” can be reason for LEO action.
    4. Open carry is permitted. Concealed carry of the blade is prohibited (so my Spiderco 3” folded up in my pocket is banned!?). Definitely sounds like the classic red Swiss Army multi-tool knives are prohibited. Gotta watch those hidden toothpicks…
    5. If a snowflake “feels” threatened by the knife…even if still tucked in a legal scabbard, then that’s enough for confiscation and/or other legal action.

Yeah, I think the Claymore mini is about perfect. I like my Claymore but the mini would just be easier to have daily. Future purchase hahaha

I was bustin' GTs stones; not providing legal advice....

With that being said, carrying of push daggers, etc. is legal in OR as long as it's not concealed or being possessed by an EF. Blade length, assist opening, etc. is another story and the definition of what is meant by 'concealed' can be quite confusing.

WA laws are similar in that weapons classified as 'dangerous' are allowed if they are open carried and not carried in a manner that is threatening to the public :notsure:; and they can't be carried by EF. WA law is designed to be an 'intent' law... Actual wording from the statute:

It is a gross misdemeanor to furtively carry with the intent to conceal any “dagger, “dirk,” or “other dangerous weapon.”

... this allows for any knife to fit the elements of the statute if certain behaviors, actions or intents can be proven regardless of original design and intent of the blade (IE>> a pairing knife carried or displayed (brandished) in a manner that is designed to be threatening or intimidating can then be considered a dangerous weapon.

*** Counties and municipalities can always have laws that are more restrictive than the state ***

*** Most states have a law enforcement or 'professional capacity' clause that exempts an LEO, paramedic, etc. from certain restrictions ***

LEO have exemptions to most laws regarding weapons in both WA and OR (and about everywhere else). Oregon is also less restrictive than WA on a lot of things knife related.
State-wide, the only prohibited knives are butterfly/balisong and automatic knives (gravity or spring assist). Also concealed carrying of any knife is illegal. Different cities/counties may have other restrictions (Seattle doesn’t allow blades longer than 3-1/2”).

    I hate this country.

Basically, if a knife can be opened partially and then "flipped open" it will be seized at the border. The only way most folders will get into the Not-So-Glorious People's Banana Republic of Canuckistan is if they're disassembled so the CBSA rats can't "test" them.

Texas does a good job most of the time with liberty-affirming laws, to ban cities or counties from further restricting a right the state explicitly grants. Preemption is the term they use. Since 2017 knife restrictions have been greatly eased, and they accompanied that law with preemption to keep down any confusion. There are some restrictions on where you can carry a blade longer than 5.5"; but other than that, there are no restrictions on knives here, and cities and counties don't have a say in the matter.

In NYS it's the opposite. Everything is restrictive and overreaching and no one has a say in it.

You’re killing me. I was at SMKW last week and they had a few JCapes. I absolutely loved them, but in a very rare moment of frugality I decided not to get one. Handing it back to the sales guy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life.

I know. They had probably half a dozen that didn’t even show on their website. My wife even advised me to get one.
When I flipped one open I slipped and it shaved the callous off my thumb. If it had drawn blood I’d have had to buy it. :angrygirl:
