You want to engrave the top of a slide on your handgun? Why would you need an FFL for that? That's nonsense.

The only way you might need an FFL is if you decide to ship it somewhere to be done. Bit simply engraving a slide doesn't require a FFL? Just don't cover or alter the serial number.

What does an FFL have to do with engraving? Now that you mention it....an American flag on my Shield 9 would look sweet.

For most handguns the serialized part is the frame. Some handguns also have serials on the barrel and slide but these are there for other countries that require different parts to have a serial. Also you can buy a new barrel and slide without the need for a FFL.

As far as I know you don't need an FFL for a slide. Let's use a Glock for example... You can buy after market barrels, slides, and damn near build the gun... Except for the frame. The serial number is molded and cast into the frame. Gun laws seem to get everyone all pissed off. Keep the thread clean and we can have some fun.

There's no requirement for the person doing the engraving to be a FFL at all unless a firearm is being shipped to them as UPS will need proof that it is being shipped to a valid FFL. Only time I could see this happening is if you wanted engraving on the serialized receiver (IE engraving on an AR lower or marking of a SBR, SBS or suppressor you made under a Form 1 (you'd want a class 3 sot for the last 3 not just any old FFL). So yeah just strip the slide apart and ship it wherever you want.

Where are you having the engraving done?
As noted above, anyone can send and receive slides, barrels, etc., even UberEbil black rifle uppers get sent to your door.
