That is Refugio State Beach north of Santa Barbara, CA. Definitely one of the best campsites in that area!

Edit: just saw that you are located in SB so you definitely know where that is located!

I guess I’m a lucky one. Transmission was built in Feb. of 2002. The 29,491st. Transmission has been real nice all these years. Towing/hauling/and mucho 4wd early years. Stopped holding my breath on ‘planet explosions’ and ‘pink shakes’ doom and gloom. Maybe Toy made a quick ‘shift’ in 02’ on some internal parts?

Good news is these transmissions can be rebuilt better than new these days and customized to suit ones needs. 162k miles right now on the OD. Closer to 175k actual due to having 285’s basically since year one.

Thought that looked familiar!! We usually hit El Capitan just south of there. The sites are a little more secluded with trees and bushes. Have you ever walked/biked the path between the El Cap and Refugio?

I remember riding that path as a kid, but I haven't recently. I worked in SB over the summer and wanted to try out my Softopper, so I stayed in Refugio. My family camps at Carpinteria SB every summer, so I wanted to go somewhere different!

Thank you! I am very lucky in how clean it was kept by the previous owner. I am trying my best to keep it in similar condition. It was also the only MT I had found in roughly 2-3 months of searching that was in my price range and didn't have a lot of miles.

Rebuilding from a reputable shop is the way to go if you plan on keeping it but it is expensive. I picked up a 04 trans with 70k miles on it, I haven't put it in yet. I didn't plan on getting rid of the truck so I have been upgrading or replacing parts expecting to keep it for a number of years. The 04 trans was part of the upgrade plan.

Oh no. I have a 2001 that I have been working on but recently purchased that 05. I planned on keeping the 01 but the misses has trouble driving it due to the 8" lift plus she has been wanting me to get a crew cab. She drives a Lexus IS350 convertible so we need a vehicle with useable back seats. Unfortunately after so much work to the 01 I have to put it up for sale and start all over again

Thanks man, I had to pull over and take the photo with this mountains. Funny you should call it Hawaii though, this is actually in a small high desert town in central CA. Look up New Cuyama. Averages around 8 inches a year of precipitation. But this year has been an amazingly wet winter and the mountains around the valley have reached up to 20”-30” in places.

I'm new and after several years of lusting over 1st generation Tundra's I finally picked one up! 2001 Tundra SR5, 2wd, 187k on the clocks. First two pics are from when I picked it up about a month ago. Since then I've added 2002 4Runner wheels w/ Firestone Destination tires ($400 on craiglist), front bully bar w/24inch LED, a bug shield, and some NGK Iridiums. After a thorough cleaning and repainting the center caps I'm really happy with it! Next up is a timing belt and Bilstein 5100's all around. 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg

Am I the only one that feels like these 1st gens are experiencing a Renaissance of sorts? It's neat seeing people scoop up these older trucks and give them a little TLC. I wonder if they will end up having a cult following like the Tacoma.

I know I had been looking at getting one for years and when the deal finally came around I didn’t hesitate. I’m planning on never letting it go.

I think the high price on the Tacoma's drive folks to consider the Tundra. Then when comparing the two folks realize how much more truck they're getting and then the appreciation begins...

It did with me. I looked at a 2011 Tacoma with only 40k on the clock. They wanted 21k for it. I felt cramped and it was kind of tin canish. My 2004 is quiet and just the right size.

And for $5400, no car payment!

Yep. More power. Better shifting transmission. Way more roomy at the same time being not much bigger in size.

I went to our local pickup truck accessory store and described what I wanted (saw another Gen 1 on the road with a grille like this one). He looked it up in some catalog (no idea who made it). I ordered it and installed it. Those are LED driving lights I installed in the bottom edge of the grille.
