Basic 20+ year old interior. It's kind of fitting... East Coast truck met West Coast top in the middle of the country. Each traveled almost 1500 miles to be joined together.

I didnt have time to read through all 58 pages of posts, so I'm hoping this question is appropriate in this thread and maybe someone can offer some insight.

are there caps on the market that can accept the weight of a roof top tent? I'm hoping to add an RTT in the future, and would like to have a full cap so I can bring my doggo on other family road trips etc. Just curious if there's a cap/rack combo that can support the weight. Any ideas? Appreciate any help!

Some GREAT Looking tundras in here!

Short answer, yes. Start here https://youtu.be/xET4fbpNGmU?si=4eu1r2yt5rzEFOsE

Or there’s this route vs a RTT

I've had a similar intended purchase with my trucks. I previously had a Nissan Frontier with an ARE topper (CX) which i ordered with the Yakima roof bars/track. I used a RTT quite extensively on it, on road, off road, etc. Never had any issues.
I now have the tundra with an ARE topper, ordered with just the Yakima roof track, i reused my mounts from the last topper. Again, just the standard topper, no HD version. It has been just fine, no issues at all.

I've never seen a topper crack or anything from a RTT. In fact, what originally helped my decision is that ARE does not offer an HD version for the Nissan frontier, but they have pictures of a RTT on a topper in their brochure...

I think this package will be a game changer for me, I needed some storage space and was missing the secure trunk area of my old GX470. I need to get the drawers installed still, but should get that knocked out this weekend.

Anyone have a full size spare tire setup in the bed with a cap? I have a chase rack with two full size spares that I'm looking to secure. Honestly thinking it might look cool under a simple color matched cap like a Leer. Don't want those overlanding variety caps though.

A friend of mine built me this out of T6 aluminum. Bolts to factory bed rails and holds a 37 and Badlands jack under an ARE cap.

Updated bed stuff. Added 4 LEDs tied into the cargo light circuit. Installed 2 house batteries and an inverter.

My first 2 toppers only had a rubber boot to seal out the elements between the cab and the front of the topper, no window on the topper itself. When I ordered this one from the same place they said they don't support doing that any more. Kinda wish I still had a topper with no front window and only the boot. Easier to clean the window and easier to reach from the backseat of the cab into the topper on road trips.

Man, I had heard that topper prices had skyrocketed recently. I didn't realize by how much.
I just had nearly the same setup quoted (I chose to go for the fold-down sliding front window) and the overall was nearly $4k

    Thank you!

I imagine being in so cal you could find one in FB or CL or the like used close to what you want for half off. Might have to paint it to color match though.

Yeah I have been keeping an eye out there. Problem is, most people do not have windoors (a requirement for me). Also people do not sell their Tundras very often and their shells even less, so the resell market is small.
The paint match is easy to get done, but there are some options on it that I will not compromise on. I know six months down the road I would be kicking myself for not spending the extra money and getting exactly what I want.

Also, I forgot to mention I also had the pre-installed roof tracks as part of my quote.

Totally get that and th same reasons why I ordered one within weeks of buying my truck. And yeah, windoors are a mandatory for a topper for sure. Who wants to crawl into the bed when you can just reach into the side of it? I still want to add roof rack tracks and a rack system for kayaks. You can do that yourself for so much cheaper. I see toppers for sale all the time in CO. Right after I bought mine a black one came up for sale for 2k with almost identical build specs. Maybe you'll have to make a trip out of it and expand your search?

Maybe @The Black Mamba will chime in here about his patience and end result. I believe he bough his truck on the East cost and topper on the west. End result is he got what he wanted way cheaper than new.

    edit:
Or you can pony up and pay for it now if you want it for use right now. Then justify the cost over time in your head. If you have it for another 10 years that was only $400 a year... this helps me decide on what I want to dump money into for some reason...

I thought I had seen somewhere that if you're buying brand new, getting just the tracks installed is a better bet. That way if you have any leaks/problems with the tracks, you're covered by the manufacturer/installer. I wouldn't be adding the rails/rack anytime soon.

A trip for a shell would be hard. I do not get an enormous amount of PTO at my job, and I am currently pooling all of it to have a 2-3 week vacation around Labor Day. My goal is to have the shell installed before that trip.
I'm not against spending the big money for something I plan on turning into a home while camping, but trying to get as much info and knowledge as possible.

That makes sense about warranty with the tracks. It all comes down to cost right? I like nice things but I also try and cut corners and do as much as I can. A good layer of sealant will help with leaks. This summer I'm adding tracks and a rack system to mine.

If your planning on living/camping in your rig, I'm the type of person that would just pony up for new and get what I want now. Just my .02

Call to other shops in the area and check prices. I had over $1000 differences in a few dealer quotes.
