Laptop for work and general use?

I’m looking for a work laptop/general use.
PDF, PowerPoint, excel, video and web browsing.

Never had a Chromebook, honestly hate windows, but never used Mac OS enough to like it either.

Max $600, would like 2 in 1 / touchscreen feature.

Was looking hard at this, but for a little more the market really opens up.

A Chromebook pretty much means you will need to rely on alot of online storage accounts and a network connection to use a lot of the apps available. For work purposes it can be limiting.

Id sadly have to settle for a windows pc/laptop. I would also try to see if i could find something with the icore 5 processor. Solely because its compatible with win7. The icore 7 is only compatible with win 10.

Asus is definitely a brand to shop.

 

For your uses, yep skip the Chromebook, the OS consumes a lot of the built-in storage. As soon as you install some basic office apps, load files etc, it'll be full and slow. They're mainly meant for surfing and online media streaming.

Ideally, the specs you want are a late model processor (8th gen i5) which will run cooler with less fan noise, faster, give you more battery life; at least 8GB RAM; 256GB SSD storage and IPS screen. SSD's work like smartphones, instant ON, fast all around; IPS are better screens with good viewing angles. Neither is a must, great to have.

Anything 14" and smaller will be portable around the house, on your lap, and travel friendly but will be more costly, unlikely within your budget at those specs. Anything 15.6" and bigger will be tabletop, full-size keyboard.

I prefer aluminum shells over plastic but again probably over your budget.

buy an AMD Ryzen based PC

you'll never get anything good in a pre-built for that price range if you go with Intel. expect it to have a minimal life and terrible performance that you'll get fed up with quickly.

Unless you absolutely NEED a mobile solution, I suggest building your own desktop. If not, save your money for a AMD Ryzen based laptop, their multicore performance is meant for multitasking, unlike Intel that'll choke quickly. whatever you do, don't by an overpriced, under-performing Mac :cringe:

It's not a SSD but you can have a computer shop transplant one later if it ever breaks down or if you want something faster, something I'd do myself, easy DIY.
1TB is a ton of storage, it just won't be a fast bootup nor super quick with apps, likely good enough for you though.

 

What makes that one better than the other options in that price range that have SSD?

I may just say fugg it and get an apple, but even then they got models from $600-$2500 lol

I think you should go to Bestbuy or Staples and handle various size laptops from 12" to 17" and first figure out your preference for size and portability.

You can always go Apple if you don't mind paying the premium, I actually prefer using OSX. I'm typing on a Macbook right now and I use a 5K iMac for photo editing. We also have PC's in the house, I use to build them, and my wife has a Asus Zenbook. At work, I use a military grade Panasonic Toughbook. In the past I would transplant SSD's into laptops, instant noticeable improvement. These days SSD's are commonly soldered chip boards to reduce size in ultrabooks and Macs, and can't be upgraded.

 

Linux Ubuntu on a cheap PC laptop ..or a Chromebook for online browsing/streaming etc..costco has this one I have been eyeing and on sale right now. Comes with case and mouse too.

I think 15.6" laptops are big and clunky, however you may not. The 13.3" XPS will have a nicer screen over the Samsung, and it has a faster 512GB SSD. I imagine a dedicated GeF vid card will make the Samsung more noisy and not something you need if you don't game.
