That's kind of an old truck for a marked police unit, at least for a well funded department like Los Angles County Sheriff's department. Consider at the newest its a 2013 model, so 5-6 years old. If its running 24 hours a day, it would be pretty much used up by now.

I know in smaller/rural counties/cities with no budget, they keep their cars forever, lots of Crown Vics still in service with them. Tennessee Highway Patrol has phased out almost all of their Crown Vics(the only thing they bought until they quit making them in 2012), replaced them with Explorers.

i was actually able to talk to the police officers that were riding in this truck. they said they have about 5-7 left in this sheriff's dept which is local in my city of santa clarita. they also said there is no modified suspension or anything and everything is stock. so their dept is trying to outfit 4-5 new tundras in the coming years which is awesome because im super excited to see 3rd gen tundras in my city outfitted for law enforcement. i will certainly take pics and post when i do see this!!!!

btw LA Sheriff's Dept is way different than LAPD so I hear their budget is much different. Just FYI. :)

I'm just curious as to why they want to patrol in a pickup truck. As an unmarked unit, the Tundra makes sense IMO, blends in with traffic/surroundings. Any sort of light "off road" duty, aka going up a fire road or whatever could be done in an Explorer, provided the trail doesn't get too severe. Even then a huge ass Tundra isn't the ideal tool of choice on a narrow trail, these things are too big IMO for serious wheeling here in the woods of the eastern US.

Maybe out west in the desert, something the size of the Tundra isn't a demerit. I know US border patrol has been using Ford Raptors ever since they came out back in 2011 or so. They have a fleet spec Raptor that the Border Patrol orders, its white, cloth seats(holds up better than leather), but other than that its 100% stock Raptor. The Border Patrol loves that truck, it just drives over any sort of obstacle they throw its way, its reliable, and its a lot faster over off road terrain than anything else they own.

    https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2...t-raptor-united-states-border-patrol-edition/

I don't mean to hate on Toyota, but Ford has been building something rather unique(and yes with the 2nd gen expensive) that nobody else has even tried to challenge them with.

im not sure either Aaron. i can tell you in my area which is high desert, there are lots of mountainous areas and fire roads and everyone knows about our wildfires. with that being said, i have never seen one of these out and about until today.

The black bed is keeping the white part from falling behind the black front.

Because the Tundra is a truck and it's used to haul police equipment. It'll also out last the Ford. The sheriffs aren't doing a lot of offroading. They just need something that'll haul away evidence/stolen property or bring in police barricades.

The Raptor is a perfect vehicle for the Border Patrol. They just outfit it with their radios and other kit. The Tahoes and Silverados they used had to be modified at the expense of the tax payer. Suspension, skidplates, wheels and tires, etc.

What would be even more hilarious is if the actually have a supercharger under the hood. So, all those lawbreakers who believe that they can outrun the Tundra would be in for a big surprise. :mudding:

Wait. What are we talking about here, hair die?

The dealer I bought from donated a CrewMax to El Cajon police. They use it to address transient encampments and other "quality of life" issues the community prioritized. It's kind of funny: it stops and 5 huge cops get out and arrest people, then fill the truck bed with any property and trash the arrestees leave behind. Pretty much a crowd pleaser.

looks to me like they bought white and figured out- too slow, have to upgrade. they went darker on the parts that contain performance parts. obviously they couldn't go with MGM (1st choice but way too fast) so they settled for an upgrade to black.

how it looked originally... before the performance upgrade...

Wrongo! Open your hood, you’ll see that it’s the silver coloured parts that make it all go.

It also has to do with the type of soil down there (where I was)....the shit is brutal. The only vehicle that never got stuck was my 2500 Hemi 4x4 Dodge work truck. That birch was a beast and did everything I wanted her to. Our other work trucks were Ford F150s (just didn't have what it took to be out there) and 1 F250 (was too fucking heavy and just sunk in the rain soak soil), Chevy 1500s and hummers. All of them got stuck....I had to pull all of them out.
