Went to the tire shop (America's Tire) for the third time today to try and get my tires balanced. I've been running 285/70/17 KO2's, C rated, for a few thousand miles now and can't seem to get them balanced. They just did a road force balance and said that the rear left tire required 8 ounces of weights. I haven't had enough time to see if the road force balance did the trick, but am I right that a half pound of weights to balance a tire is extreme? Even if it appears balanced right now, to me it sounds like this tire is defected to require this much weight. Has anyone else run into this or had to use this much to get them balanced?

    Stock or aftermarket wheels?

No issues balancing my KO2s on stock TSS wheels.
Never did get them to balance correctly on after market Anthem wheels..

Running 17" wheels, that is a lot of rubber to balance out.

I've heard tell of the KO2 being a bear to balance. I think it was @Scuba (our discount tire guru) that said it. I might be remembering wrong.

My KO2’s took a few try’s to get balanced correctly. They are notorious for being hard to balance, although if it’s just one I’d check your wheels not the tires. I’ve heard of guys getting them replaced under warranty due to them not being able to balance them.

Ranch Hand Summit front and rear bumpers. Diamondback SE tonneau cover. Rigid DOT fogs. LED headlight/fog replacement bulbs. Matt Gecko hood, and bed LED's. Foot well led's, and interior LED buld replacement. (warm) Broke the front shock of the 3" spacer lift, so replaced with 6112/5160 and 1' block rear. KO 2's. Speaker replacement, added amp and (2) 10's under seat. Weathertech floor mats. Salex organizers. Ziebart undercoating. RCI front, transmission/diff, and gas tank skids received, waiting for spring install. Compustar remote starter. front/rear dash cam.
Yup. Hard to balance. The guys at Midas had weights stacked three tall on one of my wheels. Discount Tire has had no problem balancing with my new set of KO2.

they’re on Method 313, which is forged and high quality so I can’t imagine it’s the wheel. They said if it doesn’t work this time they’ll either replace them or allow me to choose a different tire. Not sure which route I’ll go since I’ve wasted so many hours already at the tire shop with these.

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago on my KO2's. The fourth Discount Tire got it right. I'm thinking there machines were out of whack..

Ditto, Taco balanced up in two tries. The 31" on my Jeep took 3 tries and two shops. Putting BFGs on my Tundra this month and will see how many tries this one takes. Friend's Tundra took two tries, husband's Tundra took two tries. Notorious for being a pita, they're heavy.
But they look sexy, totally worth the hassle personally.

Honestly I would just go with another tire if they are offering it. Why worry all the time. Discount tire or American Tire same company stand behind their work and if they say it can't be balanced it can't be they are not trying to lie. Those tires do have issues and a lot get sent back for this reason. grab some Nittos and drive with zero worry
