I run a Pelican Catch 100 it could track a little better but its also stable enough to double as a paddle board/fishing platform and can easily hold another adult/gear.20200518_212803.jpg

Great! Did you use the well nuts? I can't tell from the picture if your rod holder is adjustable? Mine was and it allowed the rod tip to be lowered and point forward almost parallel to the side of the kayak when trolling. Not a natural position, but it kept the rod and line so close to the kayak that they didn't interfere with paddling and I could watch the line next to me for a bite or snag. I was fishing for bass and wasn't using fly fishing gear so I may be talking out my ass. I hope they're always biting.

Does anyone have any holders mounted for the paddle? Maybe just two hook clips on the side just to let it sit in while floating

I used a Scotty brand paddle clip because of the smoother shape and it sticks out less than typical paddle clips. I also used it as my stringer mounting point. I installed mine on the opposite side from my rod holder.

I did use the well nuts, they worked great! The rod holder is a Scotty fly rod holder, and is fully adjustable.

    http://scotty.com/product/no-264-fly-rod-holder-with-flush-deck-mount/

My kayak has the elastic/stretchy ropes on the side that are designed to hold the paddle.

Caught this big girl on my yak over the weekend. I've added a bunch of stuff to mine over the past couple of days, so i'll be uploading some pics of all the improvements. It's kinda like buying stuff for the tundra. You slowly add things over time when you feel some improvements could be made. You definitely have to fish out of it for a while to see where those improvements need to be and what best suits each person.

I thought about trying to haul my 11.5 yak that way when pulling the TT. What do yo put under it to keep from damaging the truck?

Well, we took the kayak out for its maiden voyage yesterday. End result: this will be The Woman's water toy. She loved it for paddling around.

I won't be fishing out of it or ever really using it again. It's way too unstable for fly fishing and I honestly didn't feel comfortable just having my expensive rods in it either. God help me if I lean even slightly too far to one side, because everything is going for a swim. I've been in ocean touring kayaks and whitewater playboats that were all twice as stable as this thing. The seat is uncomfortable for me and has a bad angle for casting, and since this kayak doesn't have pedals, I either need to anchor down every time I want to cast or end up constantly trying to manage slack line due to drifting. It was just an exercise in frustration for me and I ended the day pretty disappointed. I was was really hoping it would work out.

This is a pretty budget kayak, so I'm sure something wider with pedals, a rudder and a better seat like a Hobie would work better. I'm just not willing to spend that kind of money on a kayak though at this point. I have a 12ft jon boat, a Fish Cat Cougar pontoon boat and a Fish Cat FatCat v-boat I'll stick with using.

Doesn't hurt to check craigslist for fishing kayaks. A lot of people buy them and use them 1 or 2 times and then just stop using them so you can get them for cheap. A couple I recommend are if you can get a jackson kayak or hobie for cheaper you're getting a steal.

I saw a guy when I was out on lake Erie last week, and i'm paddling down a breakwall and this guy paddles up with a hobie pa angler 14. the new one with the 360 drive and I just got immediate kayak envy lol. It's a 5k kayak and let me tell you it's amazing. seeing it online is one thing but seeing it in person is a different story. He was easily able to go 8 mph with minimal effort with the foot drive. The fastest I can go in mine is 4 mph and that's me paddling full out and I can't do that for very long lol.

Made me feel like I was in a $100 walmart yak in my coosa hd lol. Needless to say, I've started saving to buy one. Before anyone says, why wouldn't you just buy a boat at that point? Because I don't want a boat. Kayak fishing is it's own skill and anyone that invests any money into it knows that there is a certain joy that comes with making one your own and learning how to use it. Hopefully I'll be able to purchase one in the next couple of years.

Sorry it didn't work out but the budget kayaks are challenging to use. My Feel Free is very stable but it still took over a year fishing to customize it and learn to manage my gear, etc. For me it's always about the right tools for the job. I love it for rivers and small lakes that prohibit motors, but I'm considering a pontoon for lake fishing.

I'm gonna keep an eye out for used, but boats like Hobie just don't really exist in my area. I've seen one or two pop up in southern parts of the province but they were all $2K+.

I know a guy who made his own cedar strip kayak. It was beautiful and handled like a dream on the ocean and lakes in BC.

I figured it wouldn't be 100%, but I thought it would work better than it did. Oh well, live and learn. My thought with the kayak was to be able to do quick day trips and not have to bother with waders and fins like I do with the pontoon and v-boat. Turns out that for my purposes, it's actually less hassle to use the inflatables than the kayak. They're specifically designed for fly fishing and have a lay out and features condusive to that.

This is the one I'm talking about. I don't know that he was going exactly 8 mph. I'm just saying he was severely outpacing me and like I said fully loaded up and paddling as hard as I can with no wind. I'm lucky to go 4 mph

actually i use a little floor mat that was given to me when i first fostered inky before i adopted him we used to train him to target. i lay it down in bottom of the kayak also for inky to sit on when the polyurethane gets to hot in sun for him.

If anyone is interested in kayak fishing, you might want to check this out. Fishstalker

    https://fishstalkerpro.com

I used to paddelboard a lot. I met Nate , owner and designer of Tahoe Sup, and he showed me this a few years ago. I'm in the process of getting the Tahoe Sup Tahoma, which is virtually the same thing.
You can put a kayak seat on it, no power pedals though, or even a trolling motor with a transom mount. Rod holders, stable enough for a big cooler, Standing up while fishing or sit on the cooler. It's a better viewing angle and more comfortable in my opinion. Deflate it, put it in a backpack and shove it on the truck.

Thanks. I looked at my truck and the roof mounted brake light is going to interfere with this setup.
