Agreed. That is one ugly truck. I know it is the new trend and I am just old-school - but I hate the lack of a grille on the electric cars. Reminds me of the scene in the Matrix:

I'd drive it. Pretty sweet. Don't love the front end appearance, but if you're going to drive something like this, may as well stick out from the crowd. I think the body lines down the side are sexy. I like the frunk and gear tunnel too.

Technology is great but until it becomes more popular it wont work in some areas for example dfw has 10-15 electric charging stations all spread out about 30 miles from each other cant imagine having to go out of my way to charge the vehicle just to get home. Or when you forget to charge the vehicle and wake up having to go to work

To be fair, electric vehicles are significantly less complex from a mechanical standpoint. Honestly, as long as the first ones seemed to be doing okay, Id buy one of these before I bought a Detroit (gasoline) truck, especially if they came with a solid warranty.

One report on Tesla found a 6% reduction in range after 200,000 miles. That would be like slowly fading from 16mpg to 15mpg by 200k miles.

To be fair, a Tundra with a 26gal tank has about a 250 mile range when towing a decent load :p .

Of course, my primary reason to own a pickup is to tow a travel trailer around, so I am not sure this vehicle would work within that intent. Between the 38gal tank and 20gal of Jerry Cans, even at 10mpg (towing) I'd be looking at about 580 miles if I really had to.

I think it's an ugly truck, but throw that system into a Tundra and I would be all over it. The performance of electric cannot be beat. Instant torque, true 4wd. I would love to see a true hybrid truck that had that kind of performance, but could run long distances. Plug it in and run on electric most of the time, but when needed be able to fill up with gas and run long distances.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:I'll stay with my Tundras. If there is anything that we have learned from other truck manufacturers with so-called hybrid pickup trucks, is that it doesn't work!! Until that day comes where they have perfected the technology for EVs, there are going to be some vehicles that will continue to burn good ol'e gasolene!! And burn it damn good too:bananadead::bananadead::bananadead::bananadance::bananadance:. I may consider buying a Tesla Model S 100, just for the fun of having an EV that has a little punch to it around town. But, I would never buy an EV pickup truck any time soon:mudding::mudding::mudding:

Lol what? Electric motors out perform gasoline motors in every way possible. Only thing that limits them is the recharge time (for now)

Never understood why people don't like change .

LOL. Yes, they do for smaller vehicles that are made to carry lighter loads. Supercars, hybrid SUVs and cars, but, for now they don't work well with pickups and much bigger vehicles. I am sure that Elon Musk isn't planning on making his potential pickup truck to carry 4 wheeler in the bed, while pulling a 20ft trailer loaded with other 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. And having to towed/pull the loads 500k plus miles.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:. Owning a Tesla EV pickup truck, is like Delta Airlines and others having a fleet of 300 passenger EV jumbo jets. Would you want to fly in an EV jumbo jet with 200+ other passengers flying from Texas to Europe or Asia? :crapstorm::crapstorm::crapstorm::crapstorm::crapstorm::crapstorm:

    Lol.

Electric planes aren't a good solution because the amount of battery storage is so heavy.

Trucks though, that's a different story all together.

Just to further add to my earlier statement, Until Tesla perfects it's EV cars, where they hold their charges for more than 350K miles, and or, 4 hours, they should stick to making EV cars ONLY!!!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

@HUTCHJ I would not want an EV truck either.....It's just not very practical right now. Until they can perfect the technology where it is lighter, hold charges much longer, and won't burn up under normal driving conditions, I don't want it man:sorry::sorry::violent::violent:. Just thinking about it scares the crap out of me. Can you imagine our U.S. military riding around in Afghanistan in EVs right now:ohsnap::ohsnap::ohsnap::help::help::help:

Gasoline engines are far from perfected :p . Also, to what are you refering when you say "burn up under normal driving conditions?"

It would be about as odd as them riding around in Tundras .

@Lindenwood You would be surprised!!! Teslas have been burning up while being driven just under normal driving conditions. Nothing that's man made is perfect!!! Gasolene engines have been battle-tested. I can't say the same thing for EVs. On a serious note, my wife drives a Toyota Prius:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Got a link for that? I did a lot of battery research in college (electrochemistry is f-ing complicated...), and I'd love to see how the latest tech is handling repeated discharge and temperature fluctuations. I'm a nerd at heart :D

The big issue with battery tech and EVs which is rarely ever discussed, is the environmental impact the lithium and rare earth metal industry has on our planet. People seem to think that EVs are totally eco friendly, not realizing that you pay the price for pollution up front:

    http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20150402-the-worst-place-on-earth

Then there is the whole discussion of how you produce the electricity to power your EV, and the emissions that creates... No free lunch, right? Even solar has impacts...

Don't get me wrong: I'm all for advancing the tech. I've just been trained as a materials engineer to think about everything's life cycle, from the moment we pull it out of the earth, till the time we put it back into the ground, and everything in between. A lot of the stuff that currently goes into cars is pretty safe/easy to work with, and to recycle. Comparatively, the neodymium found in electric motors and the lithium for the batteries of EVs? A lot more scarce and lot more toxic to process/recycle.

Having said all that, yeah, sure, the styling is off, but I certainly wouldn't mind a truck with 10,000 ft.lbs. of torque! :D

Just more unsolicited 2 cents... :pccoffee:

Hah, just joshin ya :) . I've been behind the wheel of a Hilux in Bagram, and later a Prado around Northern Iraq ;) . Fair enough that these are closer to Tundras than Teslas!

Just because GM made one attempt at it and failed doesn't mean it doesn't work. You do realize that the biggest hauler we have is a hybrid right? Trains are diesel electric hybrids, they tend to haul fairly heavy loads, I would even say they could handle a 4 wheeler in the bed, and maybe even a trailer with another 4 wheeler on it. They probably travel a fair distance in their lifetime too. The internal combustion engine is horribly inefficient (about 20%), electric would be so much more efficient, the torque numbers are unbelievable. I'm not completely sold on a full on electric truck strictly because of long distance travel especially while towing, but a plug in electric hybrid would be awesome.

Consumer Reports removed Tesla from its recommended list due to issues. Mechanically, you're correct. However, they are heavily software based and as such, need to be updated constantly. Something not many vehicle manufacturers are willing to do for even a short period of time (even the standard gas vehicles). If you have issues with the electronics, you can't just run to Car Toy's or Best Buy and resolve it.

Warranty's are nice but we keep vehicles well past warranty. For someone that likes to dump their vehicles every time the warranty expires, it might be alright.

Time will tell...not the manufacturer. Newer Prius batteries have failed in less than 200k and under 10 years.

Yes, that's factual of any vehicle while under load. That being said, I can gas up the Tundra in less than three minutes or so. The Tesla superchargers take about 25 minutes to reach 80% charge with the last 20% taking hours to finish due to the laws of physics. I read that GM is working on chargers that can give a 80% charge in about 15 minutes or so. Even you are admitting that you can use a Jerry Can in an emergency. Run out of juice in an all electric vehicle and you're in for an expensive tow. Or carry around a generator....
