Soo, I hooked up an UltraGauge and started taking some baseline performance metrics on the Tundra I bought a few days ago. I noticed that my MAF and torque values were lower than I expected.

I still have to do some basic maintenance items (spark plugs, diff fluid change, etc.) but checked the condition of the engine air filter. Lo and behold, the box was filled to the brim with:

Once removed, MAF went up by about 20 g/s in case anyone wonders how effective a "pinecone airfilter mod" is.

We'll see what other surprises are awaiting...

Are you kidding? Someone actually put those in place of your air filter?

These were hiding under the air filter. Must have been the stinkin' squirrels.

I would be checking for holes elsewhere in the intake. If it wasn't someone being an idiot then they drug them up in there from somewhere. Who knows what has fallen into your engine.

Critters can get into the intake below the filter with ease. They just come through from near the right side wheel well. Mine was stuffed with acorns, stashed there by mice. I've since made a screen of 1/4" hardware cloth to keep them out. And also better sealed the garage doors to keep them out of the garage altogether.

Only way to get rid of varmints is to trap/poison them until there are no more around, inside OR outside. When we moved to a country home, I trapped & poisoned for about two years. Yes, it took that long, but I haven't been bothered since.

I hear another effective route is cats or small terriers ie: rat terrier, jack Russel terrier, fox terrier. My jack-rat mix loves killing nice and rats and squirrels

When I read the title of this thread, I thought it would be about repainting the truck to Super White!

Rodents are determined and destructive little bastards and have cost me lots of money over the years. I urge you to use poison with restraint. If the mouse dies deep inside some inassessable spot, you won’t know about it till you smell the rot and decay. Getting the truck to smell okay again is nearly impossible, not to mention how much stuff you might have to remove to access the carcass.

    Good feedback, everyone!

Took a deeper look and everything in the engine bay is in the clear so far. No visible damage to the engine harness and wiring. No holes in the intake.

Pine cones were on the bottom of the air filter and carbon filter and unable to enter the engine. I found a few more cones in the passenger side front bumper. Previous owner lived in the mountains and didn't drive much so hopefully the rodents didn't follow the truck into the city where I live.

I can see how they would get into the box through the passenger side behind the right front fender. It's just a big 3" opening into the airbox. I like the idea of putting a custom screen there just in case.

Took out the heater fan and inspected and it was completely clean. No cabin air filter on the 1st gen. The heater fan blower makes a small clunking sound but that is a separate issue I'm tracking down. Looks like there is a little play in the motor shaft and the fan cage is slightly out of round.

I'm getting a max MAF of 170 g/s at 5000 rpm which puts me at 212 HP or about 75% engine load. I need to do a few more test runs up a hill under load to see if I can get better readings. I'm at 5000 feet altitude which could be affecting my air flow to begin with. With the pine cones in place, my MAF was 145 g/s at 5000 rpm. Ideally, I should be pushing 225 g/s to reach the advertised 282 HP.

Screen on the intake is a good idea, might just do that for where I live. Computer will adjust to barometric pressure, so I can't see how that effects things. I was just through your town a couple years ago, felt no different from sea level, and I'm at see level, well 50 feet up. (my cousin is in charge of all parking facilities in Denver)

Thats hard work for a squirrel! Poor guy won’t have food for the winter.

Maybe a little screen over the port entry is a good idea, in all seriousness.

Farkin' Tree-rats!! I employ the BBD12 home and auto security system...big brown dog and 12 ga. Takes the neighbors awhile to get used to the racket, but no four-or-two legged varmints to worry about either.
