I know those are two of the most practical. I'll let people who actually train chime in though

BJJ would probably be better if you plan on sticking with it. If it’s just for getting in shape, I would do whatever is closer/more convenient, both great. My family does Taekwondo, traditional Karate, mix of both, and just getting ready to start Jiu Jitsu. The Jiu Jitsu black belt carries more weight than others in the sport imo., but again both are great.

I did a lot of Judo and grappling back in my younger days. Practical for me because I'm a smaller guy, once on the ground it's a lot easier to attack the joints and apply the correct bars and holds.

Practiced TKD, Kuk Sool Won, BJJ and Ed Parker Kenpo. Kenpo and BJJ have been the most useful. A lot of fights end out on the ground. You need a ground game.

They should offer free or low cost try out classes, try both. Many things will factor in, compatibility with instructors, other students, etc.. It is kinda fun also, at least for me.

BJJ over MT for sure. But I would choose Hapkido, Kuk Sool Won, and Aikido over either of those. Steven Seagal would kick Royce Gracie’s ass. :D But really, it all comes down to how good the dojo and the instructors are.

I say start out with the MMA class at the Gracie gym. That will give you a feel for grappling VS. Striking and also if you like the gym.

Trained in Muay Thai in my younger days and was in the best shape of my life cardio wise because of the training! Highly recommended!! However, like anything in fitness or martial arts it all depends on who is instructing! That will make the biggest impact whether positive or negative.

Grappling is always useful, wrestled in my HS years but never did any standup other than Taekwondo when I was even younger than that. BJJ would be especially useful since a good amount of it is based on learning submissions from the bottom position. I’d say so both if you can.

Many moons ago, I spent many years in TKD and Kempo. I spent a few years taking some 'fighting' courses back before the mma boom, where we trained using Krav Maga and BJJ.

If you're looking for fitness, any of the arts that involve kicking, will certainly push the cardio.
If you're looking for well-rounded fighting skills, I'm partial to the TKD, Kempo and BJJ.
While any combo of these will give you solid self-defense skills, if you want some more lethal, people stopping skills; Krav Maga.

I'm with you. Before the whole MMA craze when we spared in Krav Maga, we went all out: started on our feet and ended on the ground. It wasn't pretty but street fighting is never pretty.

Yep! Our instructor used to say that KM taught you quick control amidst chaos and it's designed to stop people.
We used to learn about using weapons from the environment/on your person...coffee cup, pen, keys, belt and my favorite...a tight-rolled magazine.

I forgot about Krav Maga. I took it for a couple of months before the studio shut down for financial reasons. The little I did get exposed to was brutally effective as well. Some really good, basic, common sense techniques in there that I still hold onto today.

jeet kune do, is the preferred method, but a good old street fighter ass whipping will suffice. When all else fails, 9mm:D

I believe @TundraTex is into BJJ. I’m sure he’ll chime in here. I took a few years of Krav Maga, made it to yellow belt, and then the gym shut down.

I’ve been into traditional boxing the last few months and that has been pretty good. I didn’t like it at first but am slowly picking up the rhythm. We do spend some time on Muay Thai technique as well.

Add mountain biking and running to that mix and, at 47, am in the best shape I’ve been in since high school.

My son trained in Kenpo for a couple of years. He reached blue belt before he got burned out on it. From watching his classes, it did look like a really effective style with real world applications.
Of course, his sensai was an absolute beast, so he could make anything look deadly. The same guy trained me in physical fitness, and got me into the most incredible shape of my life at 40 years old.
