I wonder what's worse; the sting from a box jelly or a tarantula hawk???

According to the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, the T-Hawk is second only to the bullet ant. But, while the sting is 'immediate, excruciating and unrelenting'. However, the sting supposedly only lasts about 5 minutes, is not dangerous (other than allergic reactions) and requires no medical attention (unless you stroke out from the pain)...

    @Sierradevil

How long did the box jelly sting last, or did the urine completely neutralize it??

The Bullet Ant is truly nasty, watch this guy wish he hadn't put himself though intentional stings.

When I was carrying my tools as a carpenter in Arizona, we would occasionally find scorpions in the lumber and now and then a rattlesnake.
I enjoyed cutting the stinger off of the scorpions and tossing them to my buddies in the same fashion as you described. Occasionally they would get pissed off and cause me to feel some regret, lol

Fuck those little Stingray bastards. I've been surfing since '75 and worry about stingrays WAYYY more than I do Sharks, straight up.

FYI, hot water doesn't do shit when a particularly generous stingray lets you keep the barb as a memento of your time together.

The barb will keep delivering venom until it gets removed or eventually runs dry, which I can tell you from experience doesn't happen in an hour.
I have a fairly high tolerance to pain, and there were waves of pain sitting at the lifeguard station where I thought I might pass out.

There were some firemen at the beach for their workout and I asked one of them if he could pull it out and he said "We're not allowed to, but..." and he laid his Leatherman on the seawall. I grabbed it and gave it a test tug, and it was lifting my skin with it. I had heard stories of people breaking them off trying to remove them so I opted to go to the ER that's like 5 minutes from my house.

The nurse that checked me in looked at it and went "Oh, we need to get that outta' there." She took a piece of gauze, grabbed the barb and went "Boink" and yanked it right out. "Sonuvabitch!"
Turns out she was a Lifeguard for 10 years before becoming a nurse so it wasn't her first stingray rodeo.

They gave me a shot of Dilaudid and it did NOTHING! The only other time I've had Dilaudid was for a kidney stone, and 5 minutes later I loved everybody then went to sleep.

    Stingrays can suck it.

Yeah, the hot water works, La Jolla Shores lifeguard tower has a BUNCH of buckets and a hose that dispenses it super hot for just that purpose. Sometimes they'll have 5 people sitting there soaking.

The problem in this instance was that the stinger has little pockets of venom all over it, so it keeps delivering it's Hell Juice and hot water can't keep up.

In my 48 years surfing I've been stung 3 times. 2 of those, plus 1 for my buddy, all happened in probably a 20 yard radius of each other.

So if you're ever entering the water in front of the Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla, I suggest you tread carefully.

"Vodka can relieve the pain of a jellyfish sting.

    CONFIRMED

After receiving a sting from a jellyfish and then treating the wound with vodka, Kari noticed that most of the pain from the sting had disappeared. Vodka-based treatment seem to have worked about as well as the traditional warm water-based solution."

Not sure how much you would need to drink.
I'd venture a guess that a min of 4 shots would get you started.
