Ever since I bought my tundra from the Dealership used I’ve had a problem going up hills.. as soon as it kicks up the RPM and downshifts it will hold at like 2300rpm and bog down every 1 and a half seconds exactly to 2100 rpm and go straight back and forth till done going uphill. It does not always do it but for the most part it does especially when raining. Also when raining going between 55 and 60 it feels like going over bumps like it’s stuttering but that’s only in the rain or I guess when there is more of a load it’s pushing through. There is no check engine light and it’s a 2012 platinum with 209k miles. Has new MAF. I think I’ve narrowed it down to Fuel pump or all 4 O2 sensors but I’m not sure. Any help would be great

I’ve already takin it back twice and they said nothings wrong with it... they did irrelevant stuff like new brakes and the MAF sensor+ Alignment. I’ve also takin it to Coleman Taylor thinking it was the transmission and they said nothing was wrong with transmission. But I know this stuff isn’t in my head. It’s actively doing this.

Are you sure you are not spinning the rear tires and the Traction Control system is putting the brake on the wheel that is spinning especially in the rain? That would cause a surge in power as the brake is applied and released, and would not set off an error code and will keep the tires from loosing traction, also part of the LSD system.

No it’s surging every time now today. Rain or shine. And I bought it as is warranty like 5 months ago. I’ve taken it twice and they said they couldn’t repeat the problem. Just wondering if anyone else had the same problem. I don’t wanna just keep replacing stuff

I think I’m going to start with cleaning the throttle body first before I do any kind of major purchasing

No check engine light.. now I will say that it does come on ever since they changed out the MAF but every time I take it to autozone they say it’s from the MAF which is brand new but this is so annoying it’s like as soon as you give it gas and it downshifts when going over 50 it just bugs down every second

It won’t let me upload a video but the best way to explain it is as soon as you give it extra gas let’s say to get up a hill. It will go like 2400 RPM then drop to 2200 then right back up to 2400. Over and over again every second till you get up the hill or if your just speeding up it’s the same way.

Ok so I went ahead and cleaned the throttle body today. (It’s was extremely dirty). I took it for a drive for about 5 minutes and I didn’t have the problem. Not sure yet though I have not driven on the interstate yet.. but after plugging the throttle body back in my truck is throwing a (Trac off) (CEL) and (4LO) light now.. anyway to get those to go away?

Did you clear the CELs or did they just go away after a few miles of driving?

Well.. after the last time I messaged y’all the problem came back but only temporary it seems and I was also almost on E when it happened. And the CELs cleared after I disconnected the negative battery cable for a few minutes.. now trying to figure out what I should do next

Does it seem like it’s struggling to get fuel? Maybe going uphill puts something at the right angle for it to not get fuel. Do you have a mechanic that can test that? I don’t think our fuel filters are easy to replace. I think it’s in the tank.

Try a can of BG Products 44K fuel system cleaner, they sell it at Napa or you can get it online. Not cheap stuff about $30 a can but if you have any fuel issues as in dirty it will help. One of the best fuel system cleaners on the market. My Camry was surging going up hills, added a can of 44K and after going through that tank of fuel no more surging. A easy fix. Can't say that my Camry is the same issue as yours, but after reading all your symptoms it could very well be the same, give it a try it won't hurt.

I think I’m going to try that. But it’s very consistent and not random. Like when it surges it’s literally every second on the exact second not like one one second and another in a few seconds. It’s weird too because it only does it up hill. If it downshifts to get up to speed on a straight road it’s fine

Possibly oxygen sensors, getting faulty feedback to the ECU may be causing a fuel cutting situation.. may use gear 3 to keep it in gear on an incline since auto will sometimes hunt for gears

You need to make a video and continue attempting to use your warranty. Continue making videos of the problem after every attempt at a repair. Document, document, document. If they keep telling you to go away, eventually you'll be past your warranty period and you may be looking at an expensive repair.

To diagnose something like this may require driving around with a scan tool plugged in and looking for faulty data that's causing the problem. You may eventually get a check engine light from this situation as it worsens.

I just picked up a 2015 work truck two weeks ago. Me and the wife took off to the white mountains in NH.The 4.6 motor was doing the same thing up all the hills and the previous owner put a KN air kit in it. It’s great on the street. Terrible when going up a hill....not sure what I’m gonna do.Havent even made the first payment yet.

He Is Len Tarterror mentioned he cleaned his throttle body, and that cleared up the issue. My manager's Tundra was having similar symptoms. We tested the pressure, and it was producing around 35 Psi. We swapped out the fuel pump and strainer with one from this company Quantum Fuel Systems, and the pressure is back to spec. The strainer was filthy, which may have been the cause of the pressure loss when on the throttle.
