This chart is for our 4th gear though 1:1 ratio. On flat highways we're pretty much always in 5th or 6th. In that case 5th with 35s on 5.29s should be closer to 2400 rpms and 6th at approx. 2000 rpms. If my calculations arent far off those seem reasonable for 35s w/5.29s.

Regardless, the 5.29s on 35s do run at a constant higher RPM, so yeah that would explain the more noticable engine braking, for up hills I couldnt even guess, with variables of throttle input and shifting determined by load and RPM. If it did down shift though it would make the uphill easier with 35s than it would have been with the stock 32s on 4.30s.

Sounds about right to be honest. I run around 2200RPM @ 70 on flat highway. Noticeably more engine braking on descents. The whine is somewhat normal from my understanding from Nitro gears. I had mine installed professionally but pulled it apart to check backlash and shim gauges after noticing a whine on deceleration. Everything was within parameter. Whining when accelerating indicates an issue, typically with backlash or improper shimming.

Thanks for all the input. Guess it is time to go up to 37s!

I'm about to do the gear swap but still struggle with choosing gear ratio. I've seen all the tire size/gear ratio tables. I'm leaning towards the 5.29s and plan to run 38s. Do you think I should go with 4.88s? Currently on 35s.

at 35s why are you even upgrading your gears? I’m on large 34s at 67lbs a piece, at 5k feet elevation and my truck doesn’t hunt for gears at all. Just trying to understand why some go up. Thanks

Really? I'm on 285 75R 17's and my tundra down shifts in a stiff Gorge wind on the flats. maybe you just don't notice.
