I drove both. Did not like the throttle lag. Went with one that had no throttle lag. I enjoy the truck.

    Not hating just stating...facts.

For all the claims of more power, less hesitation, blah blah blah...the fact remains the hybrid is only 4/10 faster 0-60 and is actually slower in the 1/4 mile than the non-hybrid. The hybrid is heavier, has less storage, is more complex and potentially more trouble-prone.

IMO, the only true benefit of the hybrid is slightly better towing capabilities, and I think even those claims are over-stated.

I'm not surprised since most 3-gallon air compressors only require around 350 watts.

But the guy mentioned power tools. A typical corded circular saw, or angle grinder, requires around 1500 watts. A corded drill around 800 watts.

Heck, even a typical kitchen toaster, or hair dryer, needs more watts than 400.

If I was worried about drag times. I would finish truck I started few years back. Start racing again. These trucks are okay for big truck, but nothing special.

That 4/10 of a second you speak about is sitting still waiting for turbos to spool up after pressing throttle.

You make it sound like the truck can't move without boost. The hyperbolic nature of that comment is silly.

The hybrid has more power so long as it's got juice in the battery. Fact. It uses it to compensate for turbo lag. Fact.

However, implying it is some kind of night and day difference is disingenuous. The 10 speed transmission makes good use of the over square engine's natural low end torque and gets the truck moving just fine for a truck with or without battery or boost assistance.

Much of the lag is also a delay in throttle response as the RPMs don't start rising as soon as you press the throttle. That is programming and has nothing to do with the hybrid vs non-hybrid setup. No one expects either to be a race car unless they're delusional.

If empty, the performance is so similar that it's negligible for most drivers. The only place the hybrid will have a major advantage is off the line while towing heavy.

Well people are acting like there's some great divide between the two and as though owners need to shit on the other. They're both Tundras, for crying out loud.

Does the hybrid regenerate to the battery when coasting or braking?

I feel like this guy did a fairly honest and unbiased review on the hybrid vs. non-hybrid discussion.

His reasons for ultimately choosing the non-hybrid are my exact reasons too.

It does regenerative braking from what I can find searching the web. Still, it's a low capacity system used for added power and torque, not for fuel economy.

    Uh, no?

60 mph is only 88 feet per second. 4/10 of a second at 60 mph would only be 35 feet. That's if you are already going 60, not getting up to 60.

The lead in a hybrid is going to be half that distance or less. So something like 17 feet. The Tundra is a bit over 19 feet long. It's less than one Tundra length lead and that's the distance from nose to nose; not the gap between tail and nose.

So basically the non hybrid will be in your blindspot... until it overtakes you in less than a quarter mile.

    It was a joke, relax.

And 35 feet is only if you're doing a constant 60mph, not accelerating.

So youre only 17 feet behind, or 10 feet, or even 5. Whatever. We arent racing stock trucks on the strip

And the posted 1/4 mile times from car and driver and motor trend both place the hybrid faster in the 1/4 mile over the non hybrid... So i'm not sure what you're reading.

That is far enough to be looking at tail lights. Sounds like a win.

All jokes a side. When I test drove non hybrid. It laid down on full throttle take off. Half throttle wasn't so bad. But, that was enough for me.

Hybrid just done its thing. May equal out on big end. But, doesn't matter to me. Take off is what matters to me not what it is doing at 1320 mark.

I'm done. Not that serious to me.

Ah, couldn't tell and the math was just way off.

Agreed, the "race" stats are useless, especially on trucks.

Also, in 1/4 mile racing, 1/10th = 1 car length is a rule of thumb. Not strictly scientifically precise. In that scenario the vehicle is always under acceleration during the race. There's a load of variables, so all you can go with is a a close to equal as you can.

With as fat as our trucks are it is probably scaled more like tenths of vehicle lengths per second difference. Lol

Definitely nothing serious. It's purely a preference thing. It's like arguing if SR5 or Limited is a better trim; all subjective priorities.

    I replied "its fucking awesome"

For sure. I personally found it annoying toyota sort of has 2 top level trims.. like their top off road style is trd pro, and top pavement princess is capstone... Id like a few capstone features on my trd please.

The best explanation of the two in one place.

Short answer: performance-wise, they're really not that different.
