Is it OK to drive with the rear window down?

    Also,
If there was risk of the glass rattling and/or breaking due to not being supported, I doubt Toyota would let it go down all the way at risk of something happening.

Already been said, but it gets down to carbon monoxide poisoning. It's a big deal with boating. The statement in the manual prevents Toyota from any liabilities since the consumer was warned of the inherent risk and advised against the action.

I drive with mine down when the weather permits.

When I had my 2007 4Runner, I could smell exhaust coming into the cabin while driving with it open. I suspect the fact that the rear window was right up from the exhaust outlet caused that. In the Tundra, the exhaust is several feet back from the rear window, so I don't think any exhaust really gets pulled in the way it did with my 4Runner, so I don't worry about it.

Believe it or not this rear spoiler on my sons 2002 4 Runner is specifically for creating a down draft to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the vehicle. Nice piece of engineering on a 20 year old vehicle. Another reason I drive Toyota!

I drive with it down all the time and haven't had any issues with the window itself or exhaust. I couldn't do this with my 4runner though. It would just recirculate the exhaust in the cab.

I have 300k + on my 1st gen, and drive with it down all the time.

Does it rattle, yes, does it always work, yes.

How many people have died of CO in a Tundra. I want numbers :frusty:

If anyone is worried about CO, just crack a front window.

My 87 Blazer had a rear spoiler too. At the time I had no idea what it was for except I though it was ugly. Never really noticed any increase in exhaust fumes after I removed it. Now dirt is another story. Driving fast offroad in my old Blazer or current Bronco with the rear window down is bad idea. LOL.

    1) not if it's rained and there's water on your roof unless you want it in the back seat.

    2) any receipts, loose papers, or anything else is going to sail out the back window.

I've just, you know, read that these are possibilities.

I have always wondered what that was on there for. Thought it looked kinda funny but could never think of the practical purpose.

Pretty sure the second that happens Toyota will replace every CM w/a fixed window and remove that feature forever; kinda like the floor mat debacle!

My reference was to the Toyota floor mat recall that occurred years ago. Basically someone stacked 2 mats on top of each other; the floor mats shifted and ended up causing the accelerator pedal to get stuck in the depressed position when the driver took his foot off the pedal causing a collision. Rather than assigning blame to the incident where it should have landed, which was with the driver for putting 2 floor mats on top of each other (contributing factor #1) and for not just slapping the vehicle into 'neutral' and depressing the brake pedal (contributing factor #2) to safely stop the vehicle, Toyota issued a nationwide recall of its vehicles (I'm assuming this was due to litigation listing Toyota as a responsible party).

Anyhow, the end results were floor mat clips being installed on a vehicles by the dealers and subsequently by Toyota w/later model years, Toyota's all-weather floor mats (which use to be really thick, long lasting and well built) became a thin piece of rubber that wears out quickly, and warning labels/tags on all new vehicles, floor mats, etc. to 'never stack floor mats because it could result in an accident'.

Like most warning labels that you have to shake your head about and think 'who in the hell would do that'; well it's there because someone did and they unfortunately didn't feel compelled to own the responsibility of their poor decision.

It's called product liability. For everyone saying "crack a window" or "the truck is long enough to prevent" or "how many have actually," this is simply avoiding litigation - nothing else. Engineering teams have to perform DFMEAs and 'design in' means/methods which prevent harm. The floor mat hooks are a classic example. In the event a feature can't be 'designed safe enough,' the OEM must warn and advise. Same reason you see "this product may be hot" on coffee cups. The list goes on and on.

Of course Toyota knows everyone with a CM is going to roll that back window down. They wouldn't have made it a selling feature otherwise... They've probably even invested in IP for it since no other OEMs have that feature (which I can think of right now).

Aw, man, anyone seen the lawnmower warning to only use it to cut grass in a horizontal position (so, don't two people pick it up sideways to trim shrubs)...
