No. We use hay in our chicken coop, and I’ve helped haul bales for our friends that have donkeys

Helped muck out a friend's stalls at his farm for horse and goat manure, for a load for the landscaping. Did NOT roll the rear window down.

I do it all the time when the bed is empty (or clean, anyways).

Wife got a new 4Runner about 2 months ago, and she came home with this little perkiness that tells me she found out something neat about her vehicle. She told me the whole 'club' thing is starting to kick in; she had a few 4Runner owners air-high-five her, and caught someone doing a double take and pointing when she rolled her rear window down. She's acting like I did when I first got my Tundra.

I would not buy a DC Tundra solely for the lack of the power full size rear window. I love this feature and use it whenever I can, even cruising on the highway.

Exhaust gas might be a concern if ONLY the rear window is down, but if my rear window is down all the others are down too. Same with our 4R.

I think the big concern with that(4R included) is having it down and just idling, that’s when the danger can start to occur

We read some where years ago that straw had a higher chance of fostering or introducing mites so we’ve always used hay in the nest boxes. Our “poop deck” under where they roost is covered in pine shavings. And then the run area is covered in cedar wood chips.

The fume concern is from the aerodynamics of behind the vehicle. This video might explain it easiest. I agree with @Jernik though if you have others open air should always be cycling through.

If it wasn't Toyota would have put some sort of safety measure in the truck that wouldn't allow you to roll it down while in gear, or it wouldn't go into gear with the window down.

But yes, it is perfectly fine to drive with the window down. It is no different from your door windows.

As far as the fumes thing goes... That is just some lawyers somewhere being overly cautious. Somebody somewhere had a random thought that fumes entering the cab might be a possibility and the Toyota lawyers started having seizures.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

I really don't think it is as much of an issue as people make it out to be. Maybe back in the 50s and 60s it was an issue, but not anymore.

I know when I cut the muffler off my 98 Grand Cherokee, everybody told me I was going to kill myself with fumes since my exhaust ended in the middle of the truck and didn't exit out the side or back. But I've sat in that Jeep for HOURS with the engine running, and been on super slow moving, all day, rock crawling trips with all the windows down, and never had so much as a cough or a headache. Never even smelled any exhaust.

Which brings up a pretty good point. It isn't like car exhaust doesn't smell. You'd know if you were pulling exhaust into the cab.

Didn’t TopGear or Mythbusters do a test and it showed most of the air in the med of the truck is recirculating? I have a tonneau cover, so not sure if that creates an issue.

I ride with them down all the time but watch out for the bumps. The first time I heard the rattle it scared the scrap out of me, thought they broke.

That kind of makes my point. That was a one-off rare event and was attributed to the fact that the vehicle was old and in a "deteriorated condition" which allowed an exhaust leak directly into the cab of the vehicle. Also, their windows were all up, meaning anything that got in, could not get out.

If your truck isn't a rust bucket with holes in the floor boards you will be fine. And having at least one window down will also be fine.

If it's ≤80ºF out, my rear window is at least halfway down. I can't say I've ever smelled exhaust coming into the cab. It seems that would be more of an issue while stationary.

Any bed cover will prevent debris from flying into the cab.
