I'd love to have that but I need a limited slip first. Almost had one but the sales guy wanted me to pay $400 over invoice for it.

Looking back on that decision it would have been worth it.

I'm surprised we don't have a auto-4wd for our trucks even today or did they change that with the 2022?

To protect that expensive master cylinder consider changing your brake fluid. If unable to do a complete flush at least get a turkey baster and suck out as much of the old and replace it with fresh fluid every few months. Doing this a few times will at least help prevent rusting of the internal components.

I wonder if this master cylinder setup gives 4-point ABS with independent brake lines to the wheel cylinders in the rear.

Some 4Runners and Tacomas) as far back as '98, had electric locking/unlocking center diffs in the transfer case. I had one in my '02 SR5. It was great for winter driving when you have a mix of snow/ice and dry pavement -- which we get frequently here in New England. You get open diff AWD for mixed conditions, and when you encounter low traction conditions, you lock the center diff and you have regular 4WD.
I'd love to swap one in to my Tundra, but I don't know if it would be possible to make it work with the ECU.

Someone actually did that on TS years back with the same year Sequoia. I think he went by the username Crazy Ivan or something. I can't recall if he divulged all the details of what he did or not.

A tacoma with a center diff? That would imply AWD capability. This is the first I've heard of that.

I dug around looking at LC tcases, but jumped to the conclusion thats not what i wanna do.

i think i might like to hotwire the front diff actuator with a switch and momentary button. So i can have it on like normal, or off for 2 low, but the momentary button if i just need some help from the front axle for a couple seconds.

but i wont need any of that until i have a bit of lift and some tires that wont get stuck in wet grass.

I could be wrong about the Tacoma having the locking/unlocking center diff -- I've never had a 4WD Tacoma. They definitely had the push-button 4WD actuation on the transfer case lever -- I assumed the two features were bundled. Quite possibly not.

The thing I don't like about the LC or Sequoia transfer case is that they are full time AWD, with no option to be in 2WD.

Yea, I was only looking for DCs, so my estimate was on 2004-2006 double cabs only. For all Tundra's 2004-2006 it's probably in single digits percentage wise...

Yes...that's exactly what it's for. I almost bought a 2005 with this but ended up with a 2006 without it. If I could choose, I'd get one with out it....it's one of the simpler less complicated things I liked about the FGTs (brake upgrades are MUCH simpler without it for example). Having said that, I think the Auto-LSD/VSC is a very nice feature for a truck that will spend 95% of it's life on pavement and is probably preferable to a mechanical lsd in nearly all pavement situations and if everything else about the truck was right it would not stop me from buying one...the issue as we all know is the cost if it breaks. I'm not sure if there is any preventative maintenance that can be done to help extend it's life (maybe more frequent brake fluid flushes...?) but if I had this setup, I'd research that possibility and do it religiously... :D

At least the early Sequoias can be 2wd, AWD and 4wd. When I turn off the 4wd button it's just rwd, then when I turn on 4wd, it's really AWD, and then when I put it in 4lo and the gear selector in 1st gear, then it's true 4wd with the transfer case locked.

Interesting... so you can't lock the center diff without being in 4lo?

Yeah 4 lo and 1st gear. It's kind of annoying. I think the later ones were easier. There's a few different transfer case options for the 1st gen sequoias :der:

Interesting. If I read that thread correctly, the Sequoia in 2008 has a new transfer case that integrates the center differential? Nice. Only downside was having to shorten one of the driveshafts by 1/2" to make it work.

IMHM, some dude was asking about my truck a while back and told me his Gen 2 was working fine in 4WD but then got all "jumpy". I asked him if he had just got onto the pavement...

He probably thought it was okay since the toyota salespeople have no issue with you popping it into 4wd going 40 mph on the parkway while out on your test drive.

My Sr5 06’ has the button and the fancy master cylinder.

The Auto LSD button lets me do burn outs and spin both tires. With the button off, traction control kicks in as soon as a tire slips and cuts power.

That's the only annoying thing about this truck. When the traction control kicks in, it cuts power way too much.

Yeah, I’d be really curious for you to jump on the My Toyota website and get your build sheet.

I do a nationwide AutoTrader search for these trucks every month or so and I can say, with confidence, that I’ve seen less than 10 of these buttons.

Honestly, I think every single one that I’ve seen, was on a limited. If I’m seeing your picture correct, you may have an extremely rare SR5.

I've got an SR5 with it. As far as I'm concerned, it's not something to be proud of. It's a curse, not a blessing.

Definitely not a desirable option. I suspect it's why you don't see a ton of trucks with it.

If it’s predominantly Limited rigs that have it, that would indicate it actually was desirable. At least that’s what people would have thought at the time, having no experience driving it.
