Yep. The od has 170k miles. Haven’t heard of any 2.0kw Starters failing yet, but have seen only a few report their 1.4kw going bad. Looks like the chyna one was crap.

Heard the same regarding the bolts access. Hopefully you’ll never have to replace ever again.

Yeah. I’ve always counted the lumps which are just about always three lumps like your vid. Sometimes it will go to the 4th lump when hot outside with hot engine, but rarely.

We were discussing starts one time on the site here and it seemed difficult to explain the lumps concept so I decided to time the starts.

When your battery goes bad and the starter makes those slow death roll sounds without starting the truck. Those are "slo-mo lumps". I would imagine the 2.0 with a juicy battery would almost make the lumps run together. Not sure which starter I have, It's got 259k on it now. With a good battery it spins fast and cranks up nice. Replaced those contacts 150k miles ago. Glad you got yours sorted out. I didn't even remove the intake when I did mine. Just unbolted it and raised it as far as I could without unhooking the cooling or fuel lines. Then put some blocks under it. Gave me about 4" more of clearance and I was able to reach under there and unbolt the starter for removal and replacement.

Ha ha, "slow-mo lumps". Now there's a new phrase. Personally I like my starter lumps like I like my women: Consistent in dimension, and one-right-after-another. :)

That's pretty amazing that you were able to get your whole starter out and replace it just by raising the intake manifold 4". Hats off sir. I mean there's a couple electrical connections in there, that grounding bolt with not much clearance at all, not to mention the 3 starter mounting bolts on the far rear of the engine would be even more difficult to get to. It would be nice not to have to take off all those vacuum hoses and fuel lines and whatnot.

If I had to do it again, I might try just unbolting the TOP half of the intake manifold, not the whole thing. I can see the top of it unbolts because there's a separate top-gasket when you order a full intake manifold gasket set. That might give you a big enough hole to work in, and get the starter out and back in. If you could, that would be better because you wouldn't have to spend time cleaning out the area around where the bottom of the intake meets the cylinder head, since at least on my truck there was a ton of built-up dirt and sand that was just waiting to fall right down into all the cylinders as soon as you remove the manifold. And I would also go and buy a 14mm deep socket for letting me get to those horrible starter mounting bolts a little bit easier. I think I have PTSD now from those starter bolts...

I'm guessing about 4", I had 2x4 blocks laid sideways (3.5" tall) against the tallest protrusions available. There's already some room between the intake manifold and the upper block valley. Put shop rags in the intake holes. Got on a step stool and reached up in there. It's been 10 years or so, the full details escape me. Don't remember it taking more than a few hours. $13 for contacts, $100 or so for intake gaskets from stealership.

ive never attempted to do the starter without complete removal of the plenum.. good time to clean out the runners too. wouldn't not pull it and replace the manifold gaskets too. you dont want to have to do the job twice

Good advice. Speaking of dirty runners....I took pics of mine to show the forum because they were so nasty inside. They had a thick coating of what looked like black tar and sand granules. That black stuff is sticky like tree sap. Oddly though, a couple inches from the valves, the black stuff goes away. I think it's dissolved by the fuel injectors as they spray fuel right there. There's also no black gunk up inside the main big chamber of the intake manifold. There was a thin, slightly brown residue coating the inside, nothing black like in the runners.

What would you use to clean it? Maybe put it on one of those industrial washing stations and get a can of CRC throttle body cleaner spray, and a long, disposable bottle brush and go to town? I should have cleaned it but since it wasn't going all the way down to the valves I thought it was fairly ok to leave it like that.

...But here's some pictures just for intake runner porn...

clean the plenum runners. dont bother with the runner in the head. trying to clean out the head, you stand a good chance of things falling in you dont want in there.

its just natural carbon build up. run som seafoam through the intake after all this and it'll get a good chunk of the thicker stuff

to clean the plenum brake clean. or a hot tank if you have access to one

Vehicles nowadays have EGR and PCV feeding unmentionables back into the motor to be burned. Sometimes this practice leads to early demise of the motor due to buildups (such as the GM direct injection 3.6). In that case. Things that shouldn't be in the intake like oil, gum up and produce deposits in areas that fuel is unable to wash away. Folks install catch cans for this problem, a sort of reservoir for the unmentionables that has to be dumped occasionally. If it's carbon buildup, Techron is the best thing on the market to dissolve it. Likely oil scunge since it's pre combustion chamber. Need a good degreasing. And I also wouldn't recommend trying to clean the runners to the valves without breaking the motor down further. I try to clean things up debris wise with a shop vac prior to separating the intake like that.
