I was in Hawaii with my family back in '08 ish. Spent a week in Honolulu and then a week in Kona. We enjoyed Kona much much more. Only thing I really liked in Honolulu was checking out Pearl Harbor. We didn't get a chance to visit the USS Arizona memorial but we did get to tour the USS Missouri. That was incredible.

We did an off shore fishing trip out of Kona. Only caught a 20lb mahimahi but still had a great trip. Our guide's name was Russ Needa and if you're looking to book a trip, I'd recommend him. He was a fantastic guide. We also rented a car and drove around the Big Island. The locals we met were super friendly and the scenery was mind blowing.

One day I'll go back. :)

I lived in Hawaii about 20 years ago, for a couple years. I loved it, I agree Oahu is really crowded, even 20 years ago. My favorite islands were Maui, and Kauai, never made it to the Big Island. I want to go back. Oahu is really only good for Pearl Harbor, and maybe the swap meet, if it's still there.

    Enjoy your vacation!

Got to visit the Arizona Memorial and Big Mo when I visited Oahu in 2013.
The Arizona is still leaking oil/fuel to date and Big Mo is one mighty battleship.

@Outbound Well, you convinced me to return. Just booked flights for January 16th - 24th to Kona. Wife and I are going to Waikoloa Village (on the big island) for our 15 year anniversary. Are you still in Hawaii? Any highlights from your trip?

Edit: I can't read. OP was @tenntundra, not Outbound.

My wife and I did the snorkeling last time we were there and she definitely wants to do that again. We'll have to try the loco moco, haven't had that before. We'll also be staying at the Hilton (same resort, but in the Ocean Towers).

Do you also "laugh" (cry inside) when you see people here debating on whether to drive on over to the next dealership for better pricing?

Oh yes. I love that Servco looks at you and laughs if you try to price shop.

That said, I have ordered from the mainland before.

I bought mine in Albany, NY and drove it to Seattle to ship over. Great road trip and was $6k cheaper than big island Toyota. Price evened out after flights, road trip and shipping. I enjoyed traveling cross country and will do it again next car or truck.

Ship out of LA - $1100 vs $1800 out of Seattle. I also learned some west coast dealers womt sell to Hawaii unless you buy it cash. They have a deal with Servvo, so we dont buy on mainland for cheaper prices.

I went to Kona with my parents and brothers several years back and we had a great time! The wife and I are going to do two weeks in Hawaii next year: 2 days in Honolulu (Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor) and the rest on Maui. Going on Wednesday to see a travel agent and get everything booked.
