Folks, if you're like me and beset on all sides by a healthy Amish population then you have learned to say "yaesh" instead of "yes".

    Yaesh.

fun fact: Amish is pronounced with a long A.

We have been recently vexed by displeasing microstructures. They are wreaking havoc upon our qualification attempts and causing painful and expensive tears in our lamellar regions.

Hmm... lamellae: strictly verboten in my material. They severely curtail fracture toughness and fatigue life.

Ordinarily I would prescribe further thermomechanical deformation in the the desired phase field but since you're dealing with a weldment that would be contraindicated.

Have you tried smaller weld passes with a limit on inter-pass temperature to control grain size growth and lamellae resulting from excessively large dendrite formations?

Perhaps a filler metal with grain refining alloy additions?

Wait wait wait wait... you have sonic indications well outside of the weldment.

Dumb question: we're sure the parent metal is indication free prior to welding?

So whatcha do is just glob the weld on there. Like throw it at it. Then thou shalt be most pleased. But do not touch, for your skin shall sticketh to the most glorious weld blob.

Aye diminished properties, with the addition of through thickness strength reduction. We have considered a defective lot of material but have certifications of soundness. If false, they would cast a terrible pall upon many in industry.

After many hours around the rectangular table, we have chosen two paths to pursue.

First, to determine if the welding artisan excessively, yea even brutally, restrained our subject plate. Perhaps combined with an exceedingly rapid cool down period. Thus resulting in our plate engaging in self stress relief, a type of cracking masturbation.

Secondly, after consulting with many ultrasonically inclined mages, we received a resounding common answer, that is,"I ain't never seen anything like that!" So we have embarked a team of our own mages to determine if yon inspector is a wee big idiot. To include injecting sound waves that duplicate the weld inspection (referred to as shear wave by our magicians) and to your second inquiry as to the existence of previously undetected indications in the base material (called longitudinal wave by said wizards).

More will follow as the quest continues.

And, as my male sibling found out, if a glob of molten metal lands in a wrinkle in your pants crotch, you will have an identifying mark for possible future sexual exposure prosecutions.

Well? I put in my shift glaring at Widmanstätten and dodging gross alloy segregation. What news of your fatal fracture initiation sites running rampant and unchecked?
