the energy has to go some were even on a small bump its still transferring the energy having it hit the hitch will only cause it to bend the frame up over the rear axel easier than a straight impact. if your sitting still and a car hits you with 3,000lbs of force the spring is still compressing which means on your hitch is still holding the 3,000lbs of force. The most common I'm slowing down but texting sits around 10mph to 20mph which using a average 4 door sedan weighing 3,800lbs makes 10mph a 1732.3 lbs of force and 20mph 3464.5 lbs of force.
This is the reason why cars these days have crumple zones is to absorb the energy and slow down the force before getting to passengers even with are tin OEM rear truck bumpers. :)

I was sitting at a red light at a busy intersection years ago in my 2005 Sprinter 118" van and I felt a lurch.
I looked in the rear view and saw smoke or steam but nothing else really.
I got out to look and a brand new Jeep Wagoneer with a lady driving had rammed me while stopped at decent speed and was impaled on my SS Stinger and 2" ball and there was a cop behind her.
The Cop asked her what happened and she admitted that it was a phone thing and I said that I didnt notice until my Van lurched and the Cop had been watching the whole thing in disbelief.

They had to have her towed from the back of my Van and almost had to call a second wrecker to hold mine while they did it,and her new Jeep was totalled!
It was really pretty amusing and you could not tell anything had happened to my Van and still cant.
She asked the Cop if he had to tell her Husband and the Cop suggested that he might notice either way and she was panicked about the whole thing.

Anyway all I am saying is that it all just depends on the vehicles, speed, the way they line up and fate in the end maybe but it cant hurt to try to keep it minimal,or can it?

Installed the SuperBumper. I added the DOT C2 tape, not because I believe it will help a distracted driver, but as a bit of insurance against a claim the all black design could not be seen or hangs out too far from the bumper.

I've got one, thankfully haven't been rear ended so can't advise on how it would hold up. I purchased for two reasons: I needed a step for my girlfriend getting into the camper w/ the rear access door, and secondly to hopefully reduce/prevent whiplash in a rear end situation.

It says "not a step" on top, but truthfully... Do you step on it? Why make it look like a great step if you're not supposed to step on it?

I have the same one as @Blue By U btw

Wife's has had one on her Pilot for several years, we've never seen "don't step on it" noted anywhere. The owner of Super Bumper replaces the unit free of charge, if it gets damaged in an accident. The 'shock' absorbs 4 inches of travel to help with occupant and structure impacts. After getting hit twice by cell phonies, she was really tired of all the physical therapy sessions!

The SB has a machined slot for the retaining pin and to compensate for any pin hole not at 2 1/2". Inside the SB there are rubber spacers to take up the slack and tighten the fit. There are two rubber compression springs and additional spacers for the outside, again, to take up the slack and ensure a tight fit. The instructions suggest adding a spacer and ratcheting the SB down so that when you add the pin and release tension, the pin will be secured by the pressure and prevent theft.

I've got a Go Rhino step/bumper on my Tundra. It won't help you or your truck in a high speed rear end situation. BUT, it will keep the idiots not paying attention at stop lights from scuffing up your bumper. I've had 3 morons roll into the back of my vehicles because they were on their cell phones. I have one on my wife's '20 4Runner Nightshade and one on my 21' 1794. Plus for us old guys it's a handy step to get into the back of the truck.

I have never stepped on it, because it says not to, but I also do not have the need to use it as a step. The whole thing is made of rubber; I think it is strong enough to support me if I step on it close to the receiver end, but I would not step on the edge, and I am okay with that. For me the benefit of having the whole thing rubber in lieu of the steel step like the SB is that it saves my shins when I walk into it.
