Maybe GX is a little different. You're going with 9" of lift so what doesn't work for 2-3" of coilover lift doesn't matter. Don't take the responses in here as negative, we want to see it done.

Here is the usual move for fitting 35s with 2-3" of lift, several guys have done it this way. The trouble is you need around 3.5" of backspace to clear a 35x12.5 from the frame. That puts the outside edge of the tire much closer to the body when turning and stuffing, then the surgery becomes necessary. https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/seanpistols-01-tundra.100994/page-33

Ome 3” rear springs cheap 30” shocks rancho’s in the front (for now) poly bushing upper arms 35’s on stock wheels 2” wheel spacers all the way around my brand winch bumper and rear carrier .. air tank rear pull out tools lights bla bla bla
I have wheeled with that sequoia on 37’s and his build is in the description of his videos I can tell you first hand it turns just fine. He wheels it on class 4 and up rated trails and makes them look easy so yeah it’s far from a mall crawler..In the front he is running stock lower control arms with new Toyota ball joints spc adjustable upper control arms and everything else is bone stock in the front with a spacer on his bumps. The fire wall has been “massaged gently” and inner fenders removed but it’s his camber and caster settings that make the difference he is able to run 4* caster and I don’t remember his other settings but they are in his videos.. I would have to find a first gen tundra to see how the front a pillar body mount is compared to the sequoia as far as location I run about 3” lift and 35’s on my sequoia wheeled weekly.

The whole drivetrain in these trucks is the same as a 96 2.7L Tacoma and you want to run 40’s lol.

I barely trust my truck on 32.8” tires. The ball joints and tie rods are pathetic on these things. The rack and pinion are way undersized as well.

Eh, what am I talking about, might as well turn it into a squat truck.

The stock IFS can handle 37s. But everything will wear out much more quickly. 40s your asking to never make it out of a trail

It truly comes down to a few things.. it’s how you build it and what the intended use will be .. as well as how it’s driven.. there are plus and minus’s to anything you do.. yes 37’s will wear the ifs faster than say 32’s depending on terrain and how it’s driven. Take a stock truck at 40+ mph through rocky super ruff terrain or a wash board road everyday on street pressures and even it will wear out fast.. lower the tire pressure to 18-20psi on the same truck and it will be night and day... How much difference is there between say a 37 and a 40.. a lot and I agree the steering rack is a weak link ..if anyone wants to know how to build a truck with ifs to handle 40’s still be Daly driven and totally streetable look at the slowest Tacoma in the world. Mikes truck from marlin crawler is the best example of an ifs truck built right. Built right means paying the price though and a similar build would not be cheap.. building a first gen tundra that’s 4wd runs 40’s and has ifs is not going to be easy and cost a pretty penny if you don’t have good tools and fab skills to use them. If it was cheap and easy every one would do it.

Carry lots of spare CV’s. Anytime you need to lock the diffs I’ll bet your CV’s will just crumble. If I remember right the Tacoma guys break CV’s even on 35’s.

Would it not be cheaper...easier...and stronger to SAS'it at that point?

Stronger yes. Cheaper depends what you use and where you get it. Wouldn't be easier even if you are good at fabricating, you have to figure out the steering and replace brakes and front driveshaft while you're in there. A bracket and a body lift is easy bolt ons. If the OP just wants to cruise beaches of Hawaii a SAS is overkill.

But I like to see SAS so maybe he should do it.

That taco has the MarRack, Marlin Crawler”s own rack and pinion, which is actually a rack from a series 200 LC that they figured out how to increase and hold higher pressure in. Need to figure out what that secret sauce is.

    Shes a beauty for sure.
I feel with our IFS, even if you manage to fit 40s, and you are only taking it easy, it's only a matter of time before it breaks. And let's be honest...eventually a friend is going to convince you to pull him out of a hole, or to go over those rocks. And you'll pop something, haha

Yeah thats true. Thats why I said early in here that these front diffs tend to break even with 35s.

Below is practically the Bible. A very well detailed thread about modifying these trucks from guys who did it early. The main author ran 35s with mid travel and last I heard ran 37s and a custom long travel from Camburg but he was considering the XLT from Solo for that 18" travel. I never saw if he went through with it or not but he's worth learning from.
