I think if I had one and I really liked it I’d just ride it out and not sweat it and enjoy the truck. Maybe keep up with some used oil analysis and change the oil very frequently. If I didn’t like it, use the opportunity to get out of it for a slightly less guilty trade in. If I didn’t buy one yet but was considering, I’d buy something different. That’s easy for me to say though, as I have my eye on a different truck if I were to buy new tomorrow.

So... What about the happy "Year and miles with no major issues" thread you started a couple weeks ago in order to sort of counter the negative problem threads? I mean, nothing has really changed in regards to the engine failures other than Toyota just issued a formal recall on it. Now you are wanting to possibly dump your brand new truck assuming the worst. I don't think anybody is actually downplaying or denying that there is an issue, but a lot of people aren't going to give themselves an ulcer worrying about something that may or may not even happen to them. Especially before even knowing all the facts and what ultimately happens from Toyota's end.

Well boys, all you can do at this point is jerk off in your gen.3 Tundra and hope for the best. Take a load off if you will…

The way things are going in the world nowadays, you'll need that, a couple oxen and a decent horse.
Edit...add axle grease, canvas, and a 45-70 lever Henry and a hell of lot of ammo.

Based on what I have seen reported, there are fewer 24s failing, but that could be a product of not being on the road as long. The 24s could all have the same issues. If I knew 24s were fixed, I'd go get one too, but based on a number of reported failures, it does not appear to be the case.

I thought about other options, but there is really no other new truck I'd want. The new Tacoma lacks rear air vents, and back seats are too small, and tacomaworld peeps have reported a number of initial issues. If I sell, I'll just get by without a truck for a while.

However, my plan for now is to drive the shit out of it, and if the motor is bad, hope it shits the bed within the Lemon Law period for WA.

I'm looking at is as an unknown, because that's what it is. Could be a flawed design, bad bearings, or a combination of things. Time will tell.

So if you have a gen3 and decide to bail but need a truck, what the hell do you get?
I dumped a Ford to get the Tundra after an engine replacement for burning oil, then four failed repairs of a leaky plastic oil pan, so nope. Not going back.
    Chevy…um no.
    GMC…see Chevy, just more expensive.
Ram…well, I already Lemoned two Jeeps, so that would be foolish, regardless what they call themselves these day. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”.
Nissan…just a rebadged Ram, and they’re gone now anyway.
    Ridgeline…not a truck.
    Slim pickings.

Is there a spreadsheet maintained somewhere for tracking these failures? The sticky thread we have here doesn’t appear to have an aggregated list. There’s a link to a Google Doc, but it's a data entry form for new failures and I didn’t see a way to view the results. With a 8/23 build date, I’d like to see the data on how many failures we’re tracking on trucks after the 2/23 recall build date.

The soon to be gone Titan is fugly but certainly not a rebadged Ram. The gas fired Titan is pretty damn decent. Remember the ugly duckling story? That new gen Titan was the first truck with 360 degree cameras among other fancy nanny tech.

My bad.....yes the Titan diesels had Cummins. Did you read my post? Fugly Titan gassers. Also, Yota was considering that same diesel motor for the Tundra after the 2008 crash, but Dodge snuffed that out. Didn't want the potential competition from Yota in the diesel realm. The Titan wasn't competition. Never was. Yota's under development Hino marine grade diesel for the Tundra would never pass EPA bs. The 08 crashed nixed that. That ended the remote possibility of a diesel Tundra. Do your homework. The Tundra diesel possibility was discussed early on here several years ago. This forum is rich with knowledge. No spun bearings on the Titan gasser BTW.

If all is sorted after 3 years, pony up for the extended warranty, pay it off and we all live happily ever after?

Since there is unlikely to be a "fix", Toyota is going to do some kind of powertrain warranty extension. Maybe even a lifetime warranty. Thats where it starts. There will then be the lingering question as to whether its an engine design flaw, which is tough for current owners who've not had a problem (yet). Ongoing failures in MY 2024 trucks would actually provide some resolution to the issue as it would send Toyota back to the drawing board and force them to pull the truck out of the marketplace until its addressed. Or, its just machining debris and its been corrected.

There will have to be a fix since they declared it a safety recall. A warranty won't fix getting mowed down by a semi or stuck in a tunnel.

Given what we’re facing with the potential for all gen 3 Tundras being recalled, I think it’s a pretty pessimistic time.
Bad info on my part on the Titan. They used to be rebadged Dodges, but they’re discontinued anyway.
But I went to the Tundra from my Ford because of a crappy experience with my F150. Engine replacement and four failed repairs of a leaky plastic oil pan is not subjective, even if it is the highest selling truck in the world. So I stand by that. Same goes for having two Chrylser product vehicles lemoned, so I'm not going to a Ram. Nothing ill informed with that…personal first hand experience.

it would suck if your new truck was eventually included int he recall. I have a 3/24 build regular gasser and am not included....yet. Hoping for he best. Congrats on your new truck!

It’s a 70k expenditure. I for one don’t keep that kind of spending money in my wallet.
And in addition to the F150, I have owned two Nissan trucks, four “Chrysler” products including two that were lemoned, and three GMC products. My negative feelings are based on my experiences and not just some subjective ideas. I went with the Tundra because I thought their quality and reliability exceeded the others. Time will tell, but it’s sure not looking promising with the Tundra.

We're in the middle of an unprecedented sweeping recall affecting 100k+ trucks before the issue has been fully identified/disclosed/corrected. Most people view this as the exact wrong time to buy.

This is not an investment where you buy a stock when it dips so you can take advantage of potential appreciation as the market (or that company) recovers.

You're buying a truck with a relatively high engine failure issue before it has been fully worked out.
