I will say since the 3rd Gen has been out I have yet to see one broken down on the side of the road. And I see quite a few in my area. While that doesn’t really mean much I’m just saying it does seem the failures are less common than they are being made out to be. Additionally, while tundras.com is a small sample size of tundra owners, we have seen a drop off on numbers of post about failed engines and a lot of first time posters are ones that came here looking for answers on why it happened to them. We know failures are happening and to the extent no one knows. Toyota did a date range on the tundra recall and it seems to line up with what others have mentioned about the issue being ironed out in trucks built after Feb 2023. There have been failures after that date and even on 2024 models, but what I have seen from various post are people posting a truck on the back of a flatbed but haven’t followed up on the route cause of failure in the 2024s. Could be unrelated to this main bearing issue or it could be related, we have yet to see.

and to further this, I have followed this issue pretty closely before and after getting my tundra. What I have yet to see is anyone report failure happening at 70+ mph. Most report getting up to speed when the motor goes or heard knocking when starting and had it towed to the dealer. Still sucks and scary, but probably a better case scenario than blowing while passing a semi.

we can argue all day long about the 3rd in relation to any vehicle on the road and we will come full circle on all the issues going on. But we also have to address that there are a number of 3rd gens past 100k miles at this point and still running just fine. Mine is new (Feb 2024 is when I purchased it and had a build date of 10/23 according to the sticker) but I haven’t experienced any issues that others have. I don’t have wind noise, no leaking rear diff or loose bolts, no rattling of any kind, and motor sound great especially when I hear the turbos spool. This could mean nothing in the grand scheme of things and I could very well be affected with engine failure at some point in the future but doesn’t make me like my truck any less. There are some people that are happy with their trucks and it surprises people for some odd reason. I’m not here to defend the tundra or make a claim why anyone should own one. But there are owners out there that have no issues and are very happy with their trucks. So make of this long post what you will and I hope Toyota gets this ironed out for the early 3rd Gen owners and gets the squared away. But until we have more information we can only speculate and hope for the best.

Appears the only ones worried about the 3rd Gen powertrain is the 2nd Gen guys.....which you just demonstrated once again.

I got $5k off last December. They're gonna need all those trucks to hand out as loaners if a customer needs to have thier motor rebuilt.

All I am going to do is drive the Tundra a lot more. As Ivan Drago said (sort of) if it dies, it dies. Mine is out of the recall (6/28/23 build date and A Pro/Hybrid), but I assume the recall will expand at some point to include it.

I have the extended warranty, and I would guess the recall will have a warranty component, but I'd rather have the issue manifest under factory warranty when lemon law is still a factor. I'm not planning on selling or trading any time soon. It is my 3rd vehicle, so if it goes out of commission for a while it won't be a big issue for me.

I usually drive my FJ62 for most of the summer, I may pull the trigger on an LS swap and put a lot of miles on the Tundra.

Drive as long as I can. I have a 24. We shall see how long it lasts. Maybe do a project if it dies. Buy the Lexus 5.0 v8 in it as a replacement. Just find a way to make it fit.

So, what facts did I distort? You made the assertion what I posted was stupid and I distorted facts. Being as I didn't distort anything and the only reason it's "stupid" is because you and your buddies have 3rd gens and don't like what's being posted. If 2.5 gens were grenading on the road and shutting down while driving I wouldn't stick my head in the sand and tout how reliable it was while 100k recall rolls out. Even if my particular engine had not blown.

I was being sarcastic. But I guess that went right over your head. LOL:rofl:BTW...they could do it since Toyota authorized loaner vehicles when the 1995 to 2000 Tacomas had the rusty frames inspected and replaced. Do some research buddy.

#7. Just going to drive it. Kept my 2012 though. It’s set up to pull our 25’ travel trailer. I need to do some mods to the 2023 to make it more tow capable. (DC to DC charger, and “possibly” some kind of rear support). I will say this 2023 (May build date) is so nice to drive. The 12 is just sitting. I suspect the 12 will not stay around.

To me, the biggest factor is how Toyota will treat the impacted owners. I went through an engine issue saga with FCA and my Ecodiesel. I’ve never dealt with a bigger bunch of dickheads. Deny, deny, deny, obfuscate, and deny some more. I ended up suing FCA and the dealer and was 100% successful.

Toyota nailed the comfort feel with the new truck. It doesn’t really feel like a truck. I suspect this is more and more important to the market as new truck buyers continue to skew older.

I haven’t been in a new Sequoia but all I hear is how uncomfortable it is on the road. Shorter wheelbase and 20” wheels to blame?

Yep, I’ll be 70 this year. My older 2012 Tundra rides a bit like a 3/4 ton with the RAS and the E tires. I just sold my 2010 FJ with 250,000 miles. It was loud and rough. Once I put a few miles in on the 23 I was content to sell the FJ. Plus the new Tundra gets better mpg than the FJ did.
We kept the 04 Landcruiser. It rides so nice. But I don’t drive past many gas stations with it. So, we own both extremes. The LC is the definition of reliability. The 23 Tundra, we shall see..

I can’t believe how some people get their panties up in a bunch up about this (both 2 and some 3rd gen owners). 8 all the way! And throw in some 5 every now and then. Resale value? Gotta be fucking kidding me. My dad had first year production of the 1st and 2nd gen even with all the shenanigans that were going on initially and he got top dollar when he traded those in, and now he got himself a 1st pro of the 3rd gen to keep with tradition. For those folks worried about the engine giving out while driving, how do you live with yourselves? Your chances of getting a tire blow out while driving on the highway are much higher and the latter being a more scarier experience, ask me how I know.

holy shit man, a compliment ?

The cool trick that Toyota pulled off is it handles weight and towing better while still driving and riding better.

ok, go ahead and rip it apart again , I know its coming

I will say I do think this is a factor with truck tires and suspension everyone ignores. People have a truck for a while, and when they first got it with new suspension and P rated tires and doughy stock shocks they think it rides great. After a while it’s time for new tires so they go and get load Es. Then it’s time for shocks and they go and get stiff ass Bilsteins. All the while these modifications slowly make the truck ride worse and they forget how it used to ride. Then they go ride in a new truck with the doughboy factory suspension and P rated tires and say WOW! This thing rides great! I noticed it myself, I went from load E to load C tires and it felt like I was riding on a cloud again.

My 2015 Yukon lifter/failure at 80k miles. Sold

My 2022 suburban is doing good so far with 36k miles.

My 2016 2500hd duramax - had three oil leaks and main seal. sold

My 2020 2500hd duramax- left me stranded with 70k miles with injector failures and has done it again since. All new injectors under warranty and just rolled 100k miles. Gonna keep it for another 100k

My 2024 tundra 6500 miles - gonna ride the storm out. And drive the GMC if it goes down.

Is the Duramax still under warranty? That’s a pretty expensive repair if those injectors go out again, isn’t it?

It’s no longer under warranty. But I’m confident we found the problem and it’s corrected. A new truck like what I’ve got is $90k so I can replace a lot of injectors for that. I’ll just roll the dice.

I already regretted selling my ‘18 Tundra for this rolling disaster, and the recall really reinforces the fact that this is one of the poorer choices I have ever made. I’m not angry, just really disappointed. I really wish I could get my ‘18 back….
