If you can clear the Wall the rest is just another 4x trail, but that obstacle is gnarly. I’ve been down it on a 250 Husky - not sure I’d try it in a Tundra - not one I cared about anyway - but I believe you can bypass the worst of it now.

I like using my truck to haul a small dual sport to the San Juans - that’s my preferred way to explore the area but I don’t have kiddos - kudos to you for getting them out there

Nice to see some partial good content in a thread. Too bad it’s got to be colored as it is. “What people ought to be posting about instead of crying like little bitches or smugly pointing out how smart they are to a bunch of people they will never meet in real life about how they have the most superior truck ever and they don’t. Never mind about land rovers and jeeps that cross that trail every year but don’t consider taking a 3rd Gen Tundra on it as it will surely blow up, yes indeed.”

    Keep the pictures coming though!

Forget the LS swap, do a 3UR-FE swap! That truck would be the best of both worlds!

    Nah. I own both an LS3 and a 3UR-FE.

The LS3 is hands down the better engine.

For performance modifications, no argument here. For reliability, I would put my money on the 3UR-FE.

There are so many LS motors running around out there with retarded miles on them I would put them right up there with the 3UR.

Plus they’re more compact, lighter, simpler, less costly, much more power dense, and of course can be built from mild to wild.

As an owner of both I have my opinion. I’d put a nicely built LS or iron block variant in my 2nd Gen in a heartbeat if it were easy plug-n-play.

Truly the goat of engines. They sound so mean when they're cammed too.

Put in an LSX 454 with a truck oriented cam. Make 500+ HP and 500+ft-lbs everywhere, declare victory.

LS engines are no doubt great engines. There is a TON of LS engines out there, especially compared to a 3UR. That said, I have still never seen one with 1 million miles on the original engine especially in a truck duty application. Just did some brief searching too and came up with nothing, but several had 500k. Meanwhile there’s already 3+? 5.7s out there with over a million miles despite far lesser production.

Who gives a fuck about a 1 million mile engine in a pickup truck? Seriously we jerk off about this stupid shit all the time here, but the vast majority of members here and truck owners nationwide won’t ever see 250K before they move on or the rest of the truck is falling apart.

I’ve personally seen many Suburbans and Tahoes with the old 5.3L non AFM valve trains with 500K or more on them. I’ve spent lots of time being transported in them. For fuck’s sake how much more do you think you’re going to get? Those old rigs went away because everything but the engine was worn out.

Hey man, like we gotta stat pad.

Got a good thing going here.

I’ll bet an LS would fit in a 3rd Gen.

It's like having sex when you were a teen....

You jumped into the event because you couldn't help yourself and ignored everything your parents told you; but once you're in it, it's too late... pound away, enjoy yourself and go for broke :D

If shit goes bad (pregnancy, disease, find out she's batshit crazy :notsure:), you deal w/it on the back end and learn from your decisions... either way, you still had fun and have a story to share w/your buddies!!!!

It seemed that you were fine partaking in the unrelated BS conversation until I commented, after which you deleted your comment?
For most of us I don’t disagree, but you’re the one who brought up reliability. If an engine is more likely to make it to 1 million miles, guess what…it’s more likely to make it to 250k also. I guess it’s fine to bring up reliability as long as that’s what you want to talk about in that moment?

That’s fair, but overall the non AFM (or whatever gremlin lifter fuel management bullshit) GM V8’s are well known for being extremely reliable. We’re comparing two engine families here that are both capable of living wildly beyond the rest of the vehicle they’re powering with routine maintenance. At some point it becomes academic.

I'd hold onto mine, probably, with the understanding that resale for now and the foreseeable future will be negatively impacted. Now would I trust it on a big family trip out West? Maybe not.

Going on road trips as a kid in the early 70s, my dad would factor in 1-2 days for repairs to the reliable for the time Buick wagon or just to hang out at a cool spot a bit longer. Shit happens, tools break.

Sometimes adventure happens when things go the way you didn’t expect. If you’re going to hold off on a long road trip because of what might go wrong with your truck, buddy, you ain’t livin’

Oh man, live a little, is your life bubble wrapped or something? I would drive the piss out of it, in fact I do. Hit triple digits on the on ramp this am, but failed to blow a main bearing. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow to try again……
