This is more than likely your issue. I never had stock tires on my truck, only winter tires and 3 peak snow all terrains. I will say it doesn't do as good as my old f250 in 2wd but that is a lsd vs open diff issue , not the truck.

I think the safety systems are way overactive in the tundra but I don't think it makes it unsafe. I think generally pickups would be not as good in the snow as many vehicles but I don't think its dangerous. Just had our first heavy storm of the season I was out before the plows and put into 4 hi with the factory tires and had no problems. I would swap tires if you dealing with a lot of snow. I loved my Falken wildpeaks on my 4runner. I will put them on the truck when I get the chance. They were great in all weather conditions.

To be fair, my ‘20 sucks on the ice. But it is a lot more fun to drive with a squirrely ass end than an awd with proper tires just pulling through everything.

I am not saying Tundras are unsafe, but guess I’ll take the bait here a bit, and as someone who drives on snow / ice for half the year……. I will fully admit that the Tundra’s perform poorly relative to other Toyota vehicles and the domestic full size trucks.

I am on my 3rd Tundra (01, 2010, 2018), wife has her 2020 4R Pro (2017 Camry prior), and I’ve had two Tacomas (97 and 01). So I like to think I am fairly familiar with Toyotas and their strengths / weaknesses.

The Tundra’s traction control is horrible for slow speed snow and ice conditions, even in 4x4. The wife’s 4R blows the Tundra away in these same conditions. I have many domestic trucks as work vehicles, and their traction control systems also greatly outperform the Tundra in these scenarios.

The Tundra’s lack of auto 4x4 / full time awd system like the LC and Sequoia, and other full size trucks is mind boggling to me. These systems are a MASSIVE improvement over the Tundra, and I can’t believe they did not put it on the 3rd Gen.

Odd that you mention that because my 08 is a BEAST in the snow, especially when in 4wd. I will agree when on a road surface that is slick or icy from a stop, in 2wd, the truck tries to kick the nannies in and cut power because of a little wheel spin but its POWER that you need to get going and sometimes power drive the truck. I found that a single press of the traction control button accomplishes this without having to disable the entire system with the double long press. When in 4wd that system is disabled anyways. As others have mentioned, slow the truck with engine braking via the transmission when you can to help alleviate the need for hard brake pressure, start braking sooner, lighter, and longer to stop and you'll be GTG. We got tons of snow in Montana, and specifically in Great Falls where I lived and it never skipped a beat, even in -25 degree weather. Now that I'm in the Boise / Treasure valley area....have yet to even need 4wd due to winter conditions yet

I wish we got more snow just to have more experience. When it rains 10” here(a drop every 10”) people drive like it’s blizzard conditions, just how your describing.

Agree 100% with you. Always confused me why not put the Torsen transfer case from the Sequoia in the Tundra? It's the same drivetrain and in theory is just as strong and rated for the same power and towing capacity. Several people have swapped a Sequoia TC into the Tundra. From what I understand...its not even hard to do. It bolts right into place, you plug and play a 4wd computer from the Sequoia into the Tundra, have to do minimal custom wiring for the center lock button....and have one driveshaft shortened by I believe an 1/8th inch or less. Why would Toyota use an entirely different TC in the Tundra from the LC/Sequioa when they are and have always been about minimizing complexity, cost, and different parts that cannot be shared across platforms? Would have made winter driving in MT much easier and I was honestly going to attempt the swap in a year or 2 had we stayed.

Like a lot of people have mentioned, getting good tires is key here.
In addition, I just try to avoid being out in a winter storms unless I have no choice.
Having the roads clear of traffic makes it way easier for the plows to clean up the roads and get us back to our daily lives.

I love it. We get lake effect snow from the great salt lake where I live alot of times at least for now but not if the lake keeps shrinking
