Something that's always bothered me. What's the thin film that gets on the inside of windshields if you go long enough without cleaning them? It makes the windshield fog up real easy. Then, after a good cleaning, film is gone and windshield hardly fogs up. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that over time, the sun beating on the dashboard releases some kind of chemical vapor from the dash's plastic, and that settles on the inside of the windshield, creating a film, which causes it to easily fog (and look like crap...especially if something brushed against the glass, then you have a streak of clean through the film you otherwise couldn't really tell was there). Is that true? Either way, I really don't like cleaning inside the windshield cause I have to contort my body in very awkward ways to get the very bottom and can't ever get it as clean as I want.
    It can't be just me...

Yep, this is known as "off-gassing". Chemicals evaporating from the plastics. Using the windshield defrosters a great deal can deposit dirt and dust on the windscreen as well. Ya, it's kind of a drag...

Off-gassing...there's an actual term for it. Thanks!

I re-examined it and it catches my fingernail, but barely. Should I still use a glass repair compound or just try polishing it out?

Seriously. I can’t believe the amount of rocks that get thrown on the road these days. It really does seem like it’s become more of a problem the last few years. I had to replace my 4Runner’s windshield last year. Briefly owned a Prius for commuting; it got two chips in the glass in no time flat before I traded it in. Our Yukon XL just got smacked with a rock on the highway a couple months ago. Turned into a crack that went to the edge immediately. Going to need to replace it soon. These are just the bad ones; we get hit all the time.

My Tundra’s glass has been hit twice already, and I’ve only had it for two months. I’ve checked it and can’t find the spots it got hit. I’m a little paranoid at this point that I’m going to walk out to my truck this winter and see a huge crack that developed overnight.

Recently had my windshield replaced with a new Toyota OEM windshield by the dealer, and I could swear there’s more wind noise now. Is it possible it wasn’t set correctly, or missing adhesive somewhere? The wiper cowling moves around pretty easily when I press on it, too - not sure if it did that before. Any suggestions?

So, my 6 month old 2021 Tundra just got a killer of a smash on the top edge of the windshield and I need some advice.

My current OEM windshield is a Vitro which if my research is correct is a PGW windshield as they recently changed names.

I can claim this replacement on my insurance and get an OEM windshield valued at 1232.53 for my deductible of 500 dollars, would be covered under comprehensive and would not effect my rate.
I can get an OEE Pilkington for 482.89 cents and not use insurance.

I am a bit conflicted because it seems PGW is just meh quality even though its OEM, it seems that Pilkington is good stuff, should I roll the dice on getting the Pilkington and potentially better windshield then OEM or just stick to what I know and go the OEM route.
