Question on Tinting a sunroof. Good? Bad? I had it done on a 2016 Cherokee. Bought my wife a Hyundai Santa Fe. They say it’s a laminate glass that will shatter with the heat. Had no problem on the Jeep. The sun shield sure gets hot on the Santa Fe? Opinions?

Absolutely not it’s the same as1 safety glass that your windshield or a laminated door glass is made with. Now if you were to tint a residential or commercial window that’s different. Talk to your local window film experts. Iv never seen or heard this happening. Another option would be to have see thru vinyl put on it which would block quite a bit of sun also

@dessodo79 sorry to be a pest but you got any opinions on my situation? I want to try and tackle it before they spread into something bigger that I'll have to replace the whole windshield for. Post #60, last one on page 2.

I'll try again tomorrow with some better lighting conditions but here are some pics. Looking at them closer I realized my initial comment of their proximity was way off, they are closer to 15 inches apart not 10 sorry. 1 is shaped like a star the other like a half moon.

I recently got replacement windshield and I suspect it had hard water spots when it was installed, I have tried a bunch of different remedies and I can't get these (super hard) water spots to budge. Anything at the pro level I might try?

Have you tried isopropyl alcohol? I'd suggest #0000 steel wool, but even I may hesitate on new glass.

I haven’t tried isopropyl alcohol, I read that the #0000 SW won’t scratch. Any experience with that?

I use the SW on chrome, you could try it on a small area of the rear window. I'd try a light buff, definitely don't scrub. Let us know your result.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
For water spots, I’ve done the following with good success... after washing, clay bar the glass using a good foaming glass cleaner as lubricant. Then clean it again using foaming glass cleaner and a Mr. Clean magic eraser (which is nothing more than white melamine foam).
Of course, you could polish/buff it out after the clay bar if the water spots are really bad.
In my experience, the melamine foam trick has worked really well.

Yes you have to have OEM glass back in the truck for Toyota to recalibrate the system it won’t work with aftermarket glass. Other companies claim they can recalibrate but the big problem is how the camera reads and refracts the light thru the glass Causing malfunctions so I would definitely suggest going thru your local dealer

The aftermarket replacement windshield in my 2007 Tundra is pitted, and it's hard to see in sunrise / sunset situations. I took this picture of the side window glass, what brand windshield would you suggest that is OEM quality without the OEM price tag? Thank you.

I recently found a bunch of dark spots on the trucks finish after a wash and dry. Tiny specs. At first I thought it is overspray from a two story house being built on the next street over. I used True Grit window cleaner and soft terry towel to get it off the paint. I decided just to clean the Side glass with a razor blade in my hand. Sun was somewhat low in the sky. Still HOT! As I started to scrape the debris off of the glass it was actually leaving scratches on the window glass. I thought it was just smearing what was cleaned off the paint. It could not feel it scraping anything like paint drops but it sure scratched the glass. I put some a Rain-X on it but the scratches are still there. Any ideas why it is so soft glass ?

    @dessodo79

Another question about tinting. I am still on the fence since I don't want to see any peeling or bubbles in 10 years.
I see some old car with bubbles and they look ugly.

Friend told me rolling the Windows up & down will eventually scratch the tint and then the trouble start ...

What is your opinion? Do they last 10 or more years with no issues?
    Thanks

Yeah I’m gonna say it wasn’t a fresh out of the wrapper blade or u just used it on something else. Unfortunately just like shaving it takes just a few passes to dull the blade or make micro burs that u can’t see and boom scratches.

Well it all depends on the quality of the window tint. With the advancement in materials today films have come along way. Making them scratch and fade resistant. Do the research on the local company’s products and the warranty’s they carry.

Hello and thank you dessodo79 for all of the insight! I learned things here that I never thought about :). I do have one question if you don't mind (not as pressing as the others with current glass needs).

What are your thoughts on protecting new glass? I see ceramic coatings and other sealants for glass. I have a new truck and would like to keep the glass nice.

One other item that may help someone else (sort of related). I just found out about Silicone wiper blades and put a set on the wife's FJ. So far they are great and from what i have read they last a long time. I can say they do an excellent job of wiping the water away quickly.

Absolutely. Just waxing them or rain-x. I haven’t tried any of the ceramic coatings or really had a chance to look into them but the silicone blades are pretty nice as far as there longevity we have to wait to see lol. Keeping your blades free from road grime is big to that’s where you get a lot of little scratches from. I like to use some foam glass cleaner and my fingers and make sur there is no grime on the blade itself.

It was a brand new blade right out of the box with the cardboard wrap still on it. When the sun hits it just right you see all of the “spider webs”. I have razor bladed auto glass since Moby Dick was a minnow and never had soft glass like this. This is the outside not the tinted side.

Not sure if it's too late to bump this thread with a question, buuuuttt...

I found a roughly 3" scratch in my CM back windshield that catches the fingernail. I'm guessing it caught something when it was rolled down and scratched the hell out of it?

Regardless, I ordered a RainX glass repair kit & Griot's fine glass polish, and I'm going to tackle this on a clear and dry day. Is the following the proper plan of action?

    1. Locally clean with soap, dry, then rubbing alcohol
    2. Apply RainX glass repair along crack lines & smooth out with razor blade, checking at an angle to see that bubbles were removed
    3. Allow glass repair compound to cure (24 hours?)
    4. Locally clean again
    5. Use a MF towel & glass polish to work the scratch line/repair compound back to contour
    6. Re-Apply RainX to back windshield

How does that sound? Is there anything I could do to improve the final result?

Why do I go almost my entire life without replacing a windshield and in the last 3 years I replaced 3 windshields and now have two rock chips in my new truck :(

Thanks for posting up your experience, I just wanted to vent :)
