@dessodo79 could he use one of these?IMG_20190908_101750.jpg
When I used to run demo derby cars we always used this to remove the windshields. But, then again, we weren't too concerned with ever reinstalling them. Haha

Thanks for the tip. The car is completely gutted. If it breaks, not big loss as I'm chopping the whole car up and hauling it away one way or another. But I would like to try salvaging the windshield since its so new.

Have you noticed it leaking when it’s sitting or driving? If when sitting how is the vehicle parked? Flat, on a grade? Dose it have a sunroof ?

Stump jumper.. if u have access to an air compressor with good pressure like 80-100 psi consistently. Then take foam glass cleaner like sprayway. Load it on around the top and sides liberally to make a good coat then hit it from the inside blowing towards the pinch weld against the glass slowly moving from the center top to the sides then down the pillar to the bottom then do the other side. If there is so much as a pin hole you will see it. I’d have some one watch the outside while ur working the air inside. If it’s leaking as you had explained it would b coming from the top or sides. As far as me asking about the roof they are designed to take on and evacuate water not keep it out some times the drains get plugged or slightly blocked and cannot evacuate the water properly and when it overflows it can catch the pinchwrld and run down the side and appear somewhere else just like plumbing at home. If it’s in question then take a 20oz bottle of water and open the roof pour it in the front corners you’ll see the drains. Either they’ll drain right out or the water will stand go a few seconds. Or come out on the floor if there may be a hole or disconnect drain line. Food for thought. But yeah a glass shop should b able to remove and reinstall it if that’s your problem. Do remember that there is a chance of it breaking and they won’t hold responsible if it dose. You can always contact the shop that installed it and make them warranty it.

What DIY windshield crack repair kit would you recommend? Got a spot about the size of a nickel that needs a repair.

Not handy. I'll try and get one this weekend. The vehicle is covered and it's kind of a pain to take it off. Just in general which kit would you recommend?

Daughter has been in contact with Honda dealer. She does not trust them to do it properly. Talking about taking to local Toyota dealer but they have f'd several oil changes on mine. So I told her to take it to auto glass place. I will have her check sunroof drains. I know F150s are prone to those problems.

Speaking of windshields. My 2017 Tundra Off-Road windshield met with a stone from a gravel truck and I now have a 10" crack. I called the insurance company to inquire as to deductible…the good news is that I am fully covered with no deductible as I've been claims free for one heck of a long time. The insurance representative passed me onto the claims department who confirmed zero deductible and started to list recommended repair shops at which point I hit the brakes on the conversation. I told her my preference is to have an OEM windshield with installation supervised by the Toyota dealership. Then the story changed from being fully covered to coverage being limited to the difference in costs between the OEM dealer installed windshield and the aftermarket windshield. OEM windshield $750 (including 13% tax) & $250 installation vs $300 installed (Standard/Apple Glass). I do intend taking this up with the insurance company however I'm going to have the OEM Toyota supervised windshield installed…after all it's a $50,000 truck before the $7,000 in upgrades.

Well being that you have the adas systems in the truck it will only recalibrate with the OEM glass which will need to be done at Toyota. The aftermarket glass refracts the light incorrectly and will affect the lane departure and forward collision systems reading the information it needs to. Don’t let them misguide you and they will pay for the OEM glass and recalibration at the dealer. I wouldn’t except any less. They will try to tell you that it can be recalibrated w there system but it will fail and won’t take properly. Good old safelite solutions.i would talk directly with the claims department of your insurance carrier not the glass unit or your agent if it becomes a problem. They will take care of you! Good luck!!

Thanks dessodo 79. While my Tundra does not have adas I will most definitely be escalating the coverage matter with the insurance company.

well rest assured if it leads to having to go with aftermarket glass go with the company the dealer uses as to they generally sub contract out to a different company for there glass work. Aftermarket glass is a bad thing either if you don’t have adas systems. If you were to turn a lease vehicle in and the windshield was broken they would use aftermarket glass as it doesn’t affect being Toyota certified. As stated in a previous post the glass is made out of house as far as the oe. Pilkington,Pgw, of fyg are good aftermarket brands. Food for thought

Sounds like you're not a fan of Safelite. I was in one of their shops a couple weeks go having my windshield swapped out again for the fourth time. A couple Subaru owners were not happy with recalibrated systems on their brand glass.

Funny, I looked for different glass a while back for my vehicles and could never find the brands you listed in one of your replies. Is this something I would have to order and ship?

I have removed many windshields with just bailing wire and 2 vise grips. Imagine that. Be patient. Hot days in the sun help. Brake clean on the rubber to help dissolve helps.

Nope just request them they are pretty common manufacturers. And funny u say that I’m not a fan period. As to Subaru’s if u have the adas systems and it has aftermarket glass installed it will void your Subaru warranty but they won’t tell u that. Belron the company that owns safelite which is owned out of Europe are nothing more than a corporate machine that cares only about profit margins not your safety or your investment

That’s just like them to tell customers that there car needs to be recalibrated in a Gm like chevys or gmc and bill the insurance co for it when I fact they are self recalibrating units.

First of all I would like to personally thank Dessodo 79 for being honest with everyone and helping out with the glass questions.
I’m a retired auto glass installer which I was in the trade for over 19 years myself.
And yes I highly agree DO NOT USE SAFELITE as I know first hand after their parent company Belron bought out the smaller company I was working for due to trying to eliminate competition. They only think of the $$$$$$ and force their techs to install as many units per day as possible.
    Enough about them.
Factory OEM glass is always the best way to go. Yes it may cost a little more but worth it. Not only for the owner of the vehicle but the installers as well. It fits....

One thing to remember is dealerships do not install glass. They do however out source the install to a glass shop that would come onto their property and make the repairs. As Dessodo 79 stated ask the dealer what company they use and take the time to do a little research on them if possible.

Safelite fixed it. They were supposed to try to save the glass. I have not heard from daughter if they were successful. If it was my Tundra the glass would have had a big ole rock chip in it before I took it to get fixed. Then I would have filed a claim. Honda dealership totally botched the install. Windshield was not even sitting properly. It was low.

Well they over charged her by $300. She is fighting it right now. They told her glass cost. I told her to call BS unless it is OEM. It is Pilkinton so I am trying to find cost for a 2014 Rav4 limited

So I had my windshield replaced by S#*£ite yesterday and they damaged my headliner, small tear near the glass. They denied it and said it was previously there. Fortunately, I was wise enough to take before photos of the inside and outside, before I left their shop when I dropped the truck off in the morning. After showing them the photos they have agreed to have an upholstery shop fix it. The options seem to be, reline the existing headliner (not too found of this) or replacing with a new headliner. It seems like a lot of work for a small tear, and I’m worried about subsequent damage due to all the disassembly and reassembly required to replace the headliner. I’m really considering just glueing it so it doesn’t get worse. What do you all think?BBED3021-C406-4250-B9D9-53E26228AE84.jpg
