I have NEVER ran the batteries empty in 2 years. I understand if you bought this for a taxi you probably could of done better, but for average city/highway/dicking around, a Hybrid will save you money every day of the week

I have met some the richest people in the world or at least America and smarts is not a prerequisite for monetary gain. As a matter of fact some of them are not smart at all just in the right place at the right time maybe.

That is because it wont let you run it under 20% as part of the programming. I haven't ran mine empty either. I have seen it not put the juice down when it should have though due to being too low and protecting the battery. It was just driving on the interstate. I think for in town driving the Hybrid would shine the most due to the stop and go.

"When you take off from a stop sign, hybrid system helps you get going as long as you're driving gently, then engine kicks in eventually "

I've tried and tried to do this, it's almost impossible. You can do it, but you have to take off like a sloth and keep almost all pressure off the gas pedal. Way worse then granny mode. It's just not a real way to take off from multiple stop lights/signs in town. It will start with the battery (if it turned off while you stopped) but will kick in the engine if you try to take off even a bit slower then normal. I find the electric motors kick in while I'm coasting, or holding it steady on flats - and does so more often when in cruise mode, as I think they programmed the computer to do it and as a human, we can't get that loaded in for going to battery. I usually gain 2 maybe 3 mpg while in cruise mode over many miles. Again, mileage is killed when in stop/go traffic/signs/lights. When I'm on cruise on longer stretches (>a couple miles) I see increases of about 2-3 mpg - and get 19-21.5 mpg - but around the city, get about 18 or so mpg.

People aren't getting it, this hybrid WASN'T designed for mileage, though there is a small amount of that. It was designed for power at low RPM's, - this thing acts almost like a diesel getting a lot of it's power at 2500 RPM's or so. The electric motor will kick in and add power throughout the RPM range as needed. For instance, if you're pulling a load up a hill and need the extra boost, the electric motor will kick in and help the gas engine. Or on takeoff it will kick in, and help if needed. It's actually a very smart design and from what I've seen, works extremely well. The electric motor kicking in along with the transmission is almost invisible to most users in the vehicle, unless you're watching the gauges. Coming up on 1 year now of owning mine, and really love how this truck handles in all situations. I tow a 21' Searay boat fairly often loaded with 40 gallons of gas and gear on a dual axle trailer and have had no issues at all towing it.

Funny you mention the nannies that cater to the distracted driver. I sold my 2022 Ford Edge ST because it had too many gadgets that I found irritating because I do pay attention and don't think they will last ten years or will be very expensive to fix. How much does a replacement actuator that moves the steering wheel cost? Can you drive if it goes bad?

These are the reasons I went backwards to low tech, picking up a 2018 Tundra with low miles on it. Toyota is one of the few companies I would trust to make these systems last a long time but hope we can buy vehicles without them in the future or be allowed to turn them off. If not I may keep this 2018 until I can't get parts for it anymore.

That is exactly what it was touted to be. Diesel torque out of a gas engine. I don't know how many times Mike said that "the hybrid was not designed for economy".
It delivers almost 600 ftlbs of torque. That is AWESOME.

I think people have it in their heads hybrid = fuel savings. Almost all of the other hybrids have been designed this way. This is the first, that I know of, to be a hybrid designed for added power. This is also(again, as far as I know) the first time the electric motor is in line with the gas engine powertrain, so it adds to the drivetrain power, not necessarily to fuel savings. Which was exactly what it was designed to do. (As Mike also said!)

Hmm. Pretty sure my 2000 Honda insight has the electric motor between the transmission and engine with the electric to supplement the gas.

Just floor it you'll see twin turbos engage ev assist locks in to assist ice then bye bye to car you passed from 55mph to 100 = 3 seconds yes i dig this rig and it' only a limited. Get it on a downhill and it holds back and downshifts like a jake brake the highlander hybrid with awd does even better with a 4 banger on top of the electric motor with dynamos on all wheels.

Yup. 1 million dumb people don't equal one smart person. You just have a million dumb ideas feeding off each other. Also love the hybrid power, never have I felt its been lacking.

Porshe 918 Hybrid (MYs 2013 thru 2015) was the first vehicle I knew of that used the hybrid tech to add HP and torque. Arguably the best hybrid power application.

A great application of hybrid IMO. Let's not totally destroy the automotive fun by making everything about gas mileage. Sometimes I just want some GO!

Umm...the hybrid is 0.4 seconds faster than the non-hybrid from 0-60 mph. Whether that's worth the extra $$$ is entirely subjective. It wasn't for me.

Hybrid owner here. Honestly severely disappointed in the MPG numbers of the truck. And the turning radius is absolutely horrendous. Outside of that though, the truck is great. PLENTY of power, very nice seats and dash that is quite customizable. The transmission is smooth and things like the heated seats and steering wheel gives it a Lexus type of feel as far as how luxurious it is. Also as I do various woodworking projects, having the ability to roll the back window all the way down is great for hauling long stock.

All this being said, I know so many of you guys are fan boys of the truck and brand. My friend has a F150 Eco Boost and literally gets 24+ mpg EASY with 87 octane, he has a lead foot, I have ridden with him many times. Meanwhile I am over here actively trying to granny my way to 17 MPG, thus my severe disappointment. Disappointed because I know it is possible for Toyota to do/have done better, but they honestly cut the corners on this piece. I've been a Toyota fan since I have been driving and have owned 90% Toyotas throughout my life so far, but the MPG result vs MPG potential for this vehicle strikes me as severely disappointed with how they addressed it.

And I watched the video posted above, even in that video he states how the Atkins Cycle is used in the F150 and the Tundra, one gets MUCH better gas mileage then the other.... why?

Yeah everyone has their application and value position.

Mine is fun, fun, fun in these Colorado mountains.

I walk to work and get life delivered, not daily doing anything.

Thrashing this thing is more fun than anything else 4x4.

Why would anyone want to race while towing a trailer? For that matter, why would anyone want to race in a 6000# truck that has the aerodynamics of a brick? I got over full throttle launches from stop lights when I was about 17 years old.

Someone who is better at math than me could figure out what 0.4 second 0-60 would actually calculate in terms of winning distance in a race, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be more than a car length or two. But again, what's the point? If I wanted a fast car off the line, I wouldn't buy a 1/2 ton pickup.

For me, the hybrid system was just another potential failure point. It may prove to be a very reliable system, I dunno. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze to me.

It’s about torque. I was making a point why somebody would buy the hybrid not a literal race. This thread is getting ridiculous. Buy what the hell you want and sleep well at night
